POCOCK COMMUNICATION 140—PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS OBJECTIVES: 1. To practice listening skills; 2. To experience and evaluate one’s own speaking style; 3. To practice critical writing skills. LENGTH: Two (2) to four (4) pages, typed, double-spaced. PROCEDURES: 1. View the videotape of one of your in-class presentations. 2. Prepare a critique in which you address the following topics: A. Visual quality of the presentation (“Look” Channel): 1. Did my physical appearance detract from my oral message? 2. Did my nonverbal cues reinforce or disagree with the oral message? B. Vocal quality of the presentation (“Tone” Channel): 1. Was it difficult to listen to my presentation? Why or why not? 2. Was the language I used appropriate? Why or why not? C. Speech content (“Words” Channel): 1. Did I communicate my message clearly? 2. Did I offer enough evidence to support my thesis? 3. Did my delivery and manner of presentation complement the message I was trying to share? Why or why not? D. If I were to present this speech again, how would I change it? E. What grade would I assign this speech and how would I justify that grade. F. For Self-Evaluation #1, conclude with a specific list of areas where you would like Mr. P to provide coaching and suggestions during the balance of the semester. G. For Self-Evaluation #2, conclude with specific goals that you will continue to work on in all your future presentations. DEADLINES: 1.
