Self Exploration Essay December 2007 Psychology of Personality 1 There are many things that make my personality what it is. What I am going to talk about is how birth order affects my personality, because how close it falls to home for me. Also how defense mechanisms affect how I deal with situations which also defines part of my personality, One theory that Alfred Adler introduced is the role of birth order; which I believe is appropriate for me considering having three children in my family and all girls this theory is actually relevant and for the most part true. The first-borns are more likely to go to college and to achieve success as scientists. Whereas later-born are more likely to be creative, rebellious, and revolutionary. First-borns tend to show a pattern of high achievement, they are overwhelmingly less likely to propose or support revolutionary view points than later-born. Now it’s time for me to break this down. I happen to be the first born, and Alder believes that first-borns feel as if they are dethroned by the arrival of a younger sibling and tend to value authority and conservative views. It is difficult for me to evaluate if this is really the case, but what I do know is I do value authority figure more than my other sisters. I also believe on a subconscious level am slightly bitter towards the second-born which could derived from me feeling “dethrone” when she was born. I am also pursuing a career along the lines in the scientist area with biology and psychology which Alder says is typical of the first-born. Second-born children are born into a situation of rivalry and competition. This can push the second child toward greater achievements. This is true my sister, the second-born has pushed herself a little harder than I have and strives more in her career. She also has tendencies to be a 2
