SHELLY ALLEN 9/7/22 SELF ASSESSMENT AND REFLECTION ESSAY Professor Albury Transfer Student Success SLS 3140-007 When it comes to learning, self-reflection is a crucial, yet ever-changing, fluid-like element. It is a part of learning that not only directs you to evaluate your status, but also determines where you can make improvements, and teaches you to be critical of those areas in which you could ameliorate, so the appropriate adjustments can be instituted. My name is Shelly Allen, and I am a Junior at Florida State University (FSU) majoring in Computer Science, with a minor in Cyber Criminology. Throughout the short first two years, I spent earning my AA degree from Tallahassee Community College (TCC), I have discovered that it is awesome when you can honestly evaluate yourself as a learner, and discover which areas you need to improve, so you set yourself ahead of the masses, by putting effort into identifying and improving in those areas which you are at a deficit and acknowledge and build in areas you have strengths. Not every student gets the opportunity to evaluate themselves in such a way, and I am incredibly grateful not only for the opportunity to take this class but also for being able to honestly self- critique and become a better learner than I was before registering for this course. I am also grateful for the opportunity to explain in further detail the family support I receive (or lack thereof), as well as the support and encouragement I received at TCC. My family has not been a pillar of support for me and the decision I made to go back to college. I am a first-generation college student, and when I received my AA degree from Tallahassee Community College, I became the most educated person in my entire family. Now, instead of them being happy, supportive, interested, or even disinterested, they appear as though they are upset with me. Maybe because I am doing something that they wished they would have done or could do. Call me crazy, but the things they say and do, could only be described as jealousy. That is the only conclusion I have been able to reach based on their actions, reactions, and words. Nevertheless, watching the family members SHELLY ALLEN 9/7/22 SELF ASSESSMENT AND REFLECTION ESSAY Professor Albury Transfer Student Success SLS 3140-007 that are closest to me, and their struggle throughout life, is one of the biggest motivating factors in my decision to go back to school. Seeing them break their backs with hard labor skills and sustain injuries that only come from a lifetime of doing back-breaking menial labor, was enough to make me choose to pursue my bachelor’s degree at an Institute of Higher Learning, and more specifically, FSU. FSU had only been a dream of mine. Nothing more than a distant thought, a figment in my mind, or an unrealistic goal that I could get close to, but never actually be able to attain. After all, I do not come from college-educated people, so I just automatically thought that there had to be some unconquerable boundary keeping all my family members from earning a college degree, therefore I would never be able to earn my degree either, or for certain I would never make it into such a prestigious university. This is where TCC comes into my story. I decided to go back to college twenty- three years after graduating high school. I knew I wanted to go back to school to learn about computers, but I just figured I would start by knocking out my general education classes, and then see where it went from there. I started in transitional classes, as I had taken such a long sabbatical, that I needed some refresher courses. From there, I launched like a rocket into the world of college and quickly found out which areas I excelled in. I became a math tutor, and even got a scholarship for every semester I tutored transitional math classes. I networked with relentless fervor and made professional connections with teachers that offered sound advice, and whom I felt were actively playing a role in my success as a student. Those relationships led me to join a mentoring group for women, and we volunteered at various community events and had empowering speakers frequently to encourage and inspire us, we adopted a road where we committed to monthly street cleanups, and even just fun events for sisterhood and camaraderie, but most importantly, I had a successful and credentialed woman I could ask for advice, as I had no one in my personal life to rely on.
