Download Sensation. Perception and Pattern Recognition - Lecture Notes | PSYC 317 and more Assignments Cognitive Psychology in PDF only on Docsity! PSYC 317: Thought Paper Instructions Choose one or several topics from class and ask yourself questions about the topic(s). You can answer the questions by examining your own cognitive processes and/or the cognitive processes of others. This will require some subjective introspection and objective observation on your part. In discussing the questions, be sure to incorporate the vocabulary we have learned in class. Listed below are some potential questions you could answer for each topic. Feel free to use these questions as cues or think of your own questions. The thought paper will count towards 10% of your final grade. The length of the thought paper should be no less than two and a half, double-spaced typed pages. You should use Times New Roman 10-12 point font with 1-inch margins. The required length does not include spacing from the title and section headers. Thought papers turned in late will receive one full letter grade deduction for each week they are turned in late. Sensation, perception, and pattern recognition Pattern recognition is a fundamental process in cognition. We must recognize auditory patterns to identify words. We must recognize patterns of light to identify images. We also recognize patterns in peoples’ behavior to identify their thought processes (or so we’d like to think). Think about the role of pattern recognition in your own life. • At a sensational level (e.g sound and images), what types of patterns do you have a hard time recognizing? • In trying to “read” people’s thoughts from their behavior, what types of patterns are easy or difficult to identify in peoples’ behavior and why? • How do various environmental factors (e.g. light, noise) and internal factors (e.g. arousal level, experience) affect your recognition processes? Attention Discuss your personal experiences with your attentional processes. • What types of things attract your attention and why? • What types of things do not attract your attention and why? • In what circumstances does your attention wax and wane? • When your attention wanes, what can you do to arouse it again? Memory Discuss your personal experiences with your memory processes. • What types of information do you remember better and why? • What information do you forget and why? • How can you incorporate what we have learned in class to improve your own memory? Language Perhaps you have learned a second language. Describe your experiences with learning a second language.
