POL 101 Short Answer Test Study Guide for W 2013 - Prof. Lisa Jane Disch, Study notes of Political Theory

A study guide for a short answer test in a political science 101 course taken in the fall semester of 2013. POL 101 W 2013 Short Answer Test – Study Guide Your Short Answer Test will have two parts. Part I: Short Answer/Concept Definition You should answer these questions or define these concepts in full sentences (i.e. one-word answers will not receive credit). As a rough guideline, figure that a complete answer will make at least three distinct points about the question/concept. In addition to making three distinct points, you will also need to address key aspects of the question or concept to receive full credit for your response. In other words, just because you can think of three things to say does not mean that you will have covered what we think is most important for you to demonstrate mastery of the material. On the exam, we will include 10 of the following (below), you will answer your choice of 7. Part II: Identification and textual interpretation In addition, the exam will include several passages from the readings. We will ask you to choose two (out of four) and answer the following questions: 1. Who is the author of this passage? 2. What is the main message of this passage? 3. What makes this passage significant in the larger context of the part of this author’s argument that we read? Short Answer/Concept Definition 1. What does freedom mean to John Locke? 2. According to Locke, what gives us a claim to property in the state of nature and what limits our fair share? 3. What does Edmund Burke mean by “prejudice” and what makes it superior to “reason”? 4. Is Marx against “property”? 5. What does Marx think is wrong with Locke’s theory of property? 6. What is American Exceptionalism? 7. What does Christian Charity require us to do? 8. What is faction and when is it dangerous? 9. Explain Tom Paine’s disagreement with John Locke regarding property in land 10. What is the difference between “old despotism” and “new despotism”? 11. What bothers Frederick Douglass about the Fugitive Slave Law (1850)? 12. What is a mud-sill? 13. According to Abraham Lincoln, who is the ‘we’ in “We the People”? Which answers to this question do he reject and what is the significance of the one he chooses? 14. What are the core ideas of Sumner’s conservatism and what is their intellectual origin? 15. What is a muck-raker?
