Evaluating Sources Internet Research: Unit D & Unit C University Library Modules on Information Basics and Needs Rules of Source Evaluation  There is no single set of rules.  Use common sense.  Think critically.  There are several things to consider. Edition or Revision  Has a newer edition or a revision been published?  Does it matter for your research? Publisher  If the publisher is a university press, it is probably a scholarly source?  A commercial publisher does not necessarily mean the work is a popular source?  A publisher with a good reputation does not guarantee a high quality source. Website or Journal Title  While not all good sources come from well established websites or journals, it does give a strong indication of quality.  Some good information will come from unknown sources. Methodology  How is it written?  Objectively or subjectively?  Is the tone?  Persuasive, argumentative, impartial?  Is it well researched or does it lack support?  Is it a point of view piece? The Sources  Are it sources cited out-of-date?  Do all the source come from the same publisher?  Do all the sources share the same authors?  Are you sources varied enough to explore all points of view? Writing Style  Is it well written?  Is it easy to read?  Is it well organized?  Is it a primary or secondary source?  Are you sources varied enough to explore all points of view?
