The specific messages about gender that is presented in the mass media is very straight forward in what they are trying to accomplish in the media platform, the mass media portray certain accusations that [pertains to gender and it explains as to what each sex guidelines that they are to follow. According to Paul, R (2015) it states, “Gender refers to the ideas, characteristics and behaviors that are constructed by women and men in different ways and learned through socialization in different cultural contexts” (p.147). The society in which we live in have such a big impact on the different things people decides to do because of gender. The world we live in today have a weird way of telling people what to do or wear and convincing them to do that to portray that they are beautiful, skinny, etc. By controlling that, male and female should not step outside of norms of what is expected and what male and female normally do. Discuss messages about gender you have received from your family or cultural group. “The gender dimension in the labor market and the gender influence in media consumption” (Paul, R 2015). According to that literature quote that regards gender roles in society. Education is one of the most important instruments that not only contribute to succeeding in life but also when it comes to talking about how much masculinity and femininity a person is. As far as my family, there are more females than males (only about 3-4 in which they are in jail/prison), and because there are more female’s vs males, we have always taken upon different duties within our family. For example, the females have always cooked, washed dishes after meals, washed clothes and always made sure the children were fed, happy and in bed at a certain time. We always imagined that the females would be the ones to go off to college while the males were the bread winners. We did not have anyone go to the military in our family but if we did than the females would pick up the slay while they did that, but we never got the chance and that is fine. In our family overall the gender message I received when things were good were that both genders were hard working and doing anything to make sure out family did not suffer. Analyze how these messages have influenced your experience with gender. Throughout my whole life, my mom has been the way telling me about gender and how important it is and ever since then it has stuck with me wherever I went in this world. Her important wisdom in life inspired to be the lady that I am today, I am the youngest of 4 and is working on my masters and later doctorial. The thing about me is that I am not afraid to work long hours, or work overtime to get the things that I desire. There are times when I was 16 and would have to help my parents pay for different bills when they were not capable to which I still do it to this day. The reason I am pursuing my major in children social work is mainly because of my family; they play a huge role in that. Simply because I grew up around children and wanting them to become the best, they can be regardless of what society wants to do with them. Furthermore, my mom has helped me acknowledge the importance of being comfortable in your own skin and clothes and not needing media to tell me otherwise. Explain how you might address issues related to sexism in the mass media and diverse cultural beliefs about gender and gender roles in your social work practice. As a future social worker, I feel as though it will be extremely to definitely demonstrate my resources I have used in under grad and grad school to be better prepared while I work with
