Learn about the definition, examples, and practical applications of computer software. Updated: 10/23/2021 Create an account Computer Software Defined Computer software is programming code executed on a computer processor. The code can be machine-level code, or code written for an operating system. An operating system is software intended to provide a predictable and dependable layer for other programmers to build other software on, which are known as applications. Operating systems can be found on all smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. These systems give the device the functionality it needs. For example, Apple's iOS and Android's OS were developed specifically for portable devices. Computer software provides a dependable layer for hardware manufacturers. This standardization creates an efficient environment for programmers to create smaller programs, which can be run by millions of computers. Software can also be thought of as an expression that contrasts with hardware. The physical components of a computer are the hardware; the digital programs running on the hardware are the software. Software can also be updated or replaced much easier than hardware. Additionally, software can be distributed to a number of hardware receivers. Basically, software is the computer logic computer users interact with.  Quiz    Course  Network Layer of the OSI Model: Functions, Design & Security 5:21  Presentation Layer of the OSI Model: Definition, Functions & Protocols 7:01  Session Layer of the OSI Model: Functions, Protocols & Examples 6:18  Transport Layer of the OSI Model: Functions, Security & Protocol 3:31  What is a DNS? - Definition & Explanation 7:23  What is an Internet Service Provider (ISP)? - Definition & Examples 6:31  What is an IP Address? - Definition & Explanation  What is Antivirus Software? - Examples & Overview 4:48  What is Bandwidth? - Usage, Limits & Measurement 5:10  What Is Boolean Logic? - Definition, Diagram & Examples  What Is Extranet? - Definition & Concept  What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)? - Definition & Explanation 5:51  What is Hypermedia? - Definition & Systems  What is the Internet? - Definition & Explanation 5:25  What Is Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)? - Definition & History  What is Web Development? - Tools & Overview  What is User Experience? - Definition & Design  What is JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)?  What is a REST Web Service? - Tutorial & Example  Go toInternet, Intranet, and Extranet: Tutoring Solution Ch 5. Network Systems Technology: Tutoring...
