Download Starry Night Cheat Sheet - Beyond the Earth in Space and Time | NATS 102 and more Study notes Earth Sciences in PDF only on Docsity! Nats 102, Bechtold and Oppenheimer Jan/Feb 2006 STARRY NIGHT CHEAT SHEET You will find STARRY NIGHT on WINDOWS computers in the Information Commons at the ILC under the Main Library. Click on the ‘Class Software’ folder, and then the ‘Astronomy’ folder, and then on the ‘Starry Night Enthusiast’ folder. Open up ‘Starry Night Enthusiast 5’ to start the program. This is high quality software that is pretty intuitive. This cheat-sheet will help you learn some of the common things you will do in the Starry Night Homework assignment. Feel free to explore more since there are some really fun things you do. Tell us if there are any problems. The program should open with your location being Tucson and the time being the current local time. You are standing in the middle of a field and it is day or night depending on what time it is. Your time, location, and looking direction are all displayed across the top. Everything that you will need is either here or in the menu tabs on the left. Remember, you can always press the buttons ‘Now’ and ‘Home’ to return to the here and now. THINGS TO TRY: 1. Look Around- Hold down the mouse button to move your direction of gaze. If it is daytime, you will not see any stars except the Sun. You can also press the N, S, E, W buttons below the Gaze direction (upper right) to look in a particular direction, and the Z button sends you to the Zenith. 2. Change the Time- On the upper left you can click to see today’s sky at sunrise or sunset, try this. -There is a tab (with an arrow) to the right of the time with other options like moon rise, moonset, and moon transit you can explore. -Just right of the time is the Time Flow Rate. Click the tab to accelerate time and press the play button below if need be. 3000x works really well. This is really cool at night, and you can see the movement of the night sky. -You can click on any portion of the time to change it by using the arrow keys. You can see the sky at any time between 4713 BC and 9999 AD, and the planetary positions should still be accurate. -You can always return to the present by pressing the ‘now’ button under the time. 3. Mouse over objects- Make sure it is night. Putting the mouse on an object will tell you what it is, along with its celestial coordinates and distance. Try this. 4. Find objects- Click the ‘Find’ tab on the left edge at the top (Cntl-F also works). You can either click on one of the planets or type in the planet name and search for it. Try this for Venus and Mars.
