Name _________________________________________ Date _________ Period _____ Unit 12: Intro to Statistics – Statistical Questions Guided Notes ANSWERS Vocabulary Statistics – The collection, organization, presentation, and analysis of data. Using data to answer questions. Statistical Question – A question that anticipates variability in the data that would be collected in order to answer the question. A question with many possible answers. Variability – Variability in a data set occurs when the observations in the data set are not all the same. Categorical Data – Data that can be classified by type, such as colors or breeds of dogs. Numerical Data – Data that is measurable and collected in number form. Data that can be manipulated mathematically. Statistical or Not? Determine if each question is statistical or not and why. 1. How tall is your 6th grade math teacher? Not statistics. This question would not be answered by collecting data that vary because my sixth- grade math teacher can only be one height. 2. How many minutes do students in your class spend getting ready for school? Statistical. The number of minutes students spend getting ready for school would vary 3. What is your hand span? Not statistical. This question is not a statistical question because I would just measure my handspan. It would not be answered by collecting data that vary. 4. How many pockets on their clothes do students in your class have? Statistical. The number of pockets for each student would vary Big take away: Statistical questions have to have ____many____ possible answers. Types of Data We use two types of data to answer statistical questions: numerical and categorical. If we recorded the age of 25 baseball cards, we would have numerical data. Each value in a numerical data set is a number. If we recorded the team of the featured player for 25 baseball cards, you would have categorical data. Although you still have 25 data values, the data values are not numbers. They would be team names, which you can think of as categories. Numerical Data Examples Categorical Data Examples  Height  Number of pets  Minutes to get to school  Eye color  Month you were born in  Favorite author Practice For each of the following, determine whether or not the question is a statistical question. Give a reason for your answer. 1. Who is my favorite movie star? This is not a statistical question because it is not answered by collecting data that vary. 2. What are the favorite colors of sixth graders in my school? This is a statistical question because to answer this question, you would collect data by asking students about their favorite colors, and there would be variability in the data. The favorite color would not be the same for every student. 3. How many years have students in my school’s band or orchestra played an instrument? This is a statistical question because to answer this question, you would collect data by asking students in the band about how many years they have played an instrument, and there would be variability in the data. The number of years would not be the same for every student. 4. What is the favorite subject of sixth graders at my school? This is a statistical question because to answer this question, you would collect data by asking students about their favorite subjects, and there would be variability in the data. The favorite subject would not be the same for every student. 5. How many brothers and sisters does my best friend have? This is not a statistical question because it is not answered by collecting data that vary.
