Storage devices Definition​: “A storage device is any computing hardware that is used for storing and extracting data and files.” Purpose: It can hold and store information both temporarily and permanently and can be internal or external to a computer, server or any similar computing device. A storage device may also be known as a” storage medium or storage media”. The purpose of a storage device is to keep data saved in it, even if the computer is turned off. Storage involves two processes: 1. Writing or recording data so it can be found later for use. 2. Reading stored data, then transferring it into the computer's memory. Types of storage devices: There are two types of storage devices: 1. Magnetic storage device. 2. Optical storage device. Magnetic storage devices: Definition​: Magnetic storage is the storage of data on a magnetized medium. These devices are coated with a magnetically sensitive material, such as iron oxide, that reacts as a magnetic field. Magnetic storage devices include: diskette drives, hard disk drives, high capacity floppy disk and tape drives.
