South Mountains Field Exercise in Structural Geology, Lab Reports of Geology

A field exercise in structural geology focusing on the south mountains, where students will map a contact between two rocks, document rock fabrics, xenoliths, dikes, and fractures, provide complete rock descriptions, and determine the relative age between the two units. Students are encouraged to work together but make their own sketches and record observations carefully.

Structural Geology South Mountains Field exercise Adjacent to Tempe are the South Mountains. Within them is a record preserved in the rocks that tells us about crustal deformation and plutonism. This field exercise will give you experience mapping a contact and with rock fabrics. Work steadily, practicing your mapping skills, try to interpret things in three dimensions, and record your observations carefully. You may work together, but everyone must make their own sketches. We will map the contact west of the parking area. Tasks: 1) Map the contact between the light and dark rocks. As you go, look at features such as fabric, xenoliths, dikes, and fractures within both rocks and document their location and use and appropriate symbol. 2) Provide complete rock descriptions for the two units. 3) What is the relative age between the two rocks? Record in writing and sketches evidence for the relative age. How do we know that one is younger than the other? Turn in map, rock descriptions and descriptions of evidence for relative age of the rock units. GLG310/598 Arrowsmith March 24, 2001
