It will be a 2- hour, closed-book, in class exam. Please do not bring your class notes or books. We will provide bluebooks and scratch paper. Do bring a couple of pens. The exam will consist of three parts: (1) Short identification terms (30% of grade). There will be ten total, three from the first half of the course and seven from the second half. The terms from the first half are the same as those for the midterm. The terms from the second half will be chosen from the list below. (2) Text identification matching questions (20% of grade). You will be given four short excerpts from assigned readings from this course; you will match them with the author and title of the work. I will choose excerpts that are as obvious as possible, ones that involve the central concepts and arguments of each text. (3) Essay question (50% of grade). You will write one essay chosen from a list of two. The essay questions on the exam are given below. What makes a good short identification answer? A good answer to a short identification question will address the themes on which the course has focused. It should be brief yet specific. Here are examples of short identifications of “Odysseus”: 1. “A mythical ancient Greek hero.” While true, this is a poor answer. It shows some knowledge of who Odysseus was but it doesn’t indicate why he is important in the course. 2. “A Greek hero from the era of the Trojan War. He was famed for his cunning, but in Sophocles’s play Philoctetes, he was portrayed as having no morals. He represented expediency in political decisions.” This is a much better answer, since it shows both a knowledge of who Odysseus was and why he is important in the framework of this course.
