Study Guide:  Exam 2  Greece and Rome      Greece: Major Concepts    Aegean Origins:  Know the major characteristics and important buildings of both the Mycenaean and  Minoan cultures.      Materiality:  What were the primary materials used in Greek construction?  How did these materials  influence the structure, form, and overall appearance of these buildings?  What are some specific  examples that discuss this idea?      Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Periods:  Know the approximate dates and general characteristics of  each time period.  What were the strengths and weaknesses of each period?  What are some examples  of buildings in each period and how do they relate to the ideas of their respected eras?    Temples:  What is the significance of a Greek Temple?  What are some important examples?  What are  the main parts?    Entasis:  What is this?  Why is this important?  What does this effect reveal about the Greek  Perspective?    Acropolis:  What is an acropolis?  What were some of the prominent cities in ancient Greece?  More  specifically, be able to identify the essential components of the acropolis at Athens and explain the  significance of its organization.    Urban Form:  What were the major characteristics of Greek city organization?  How did this differ from  Roman urban planning?  What are the primary building types found in Greek cities?    The Column:  The column was an essential component in Greek architecture.  Be able to explain this  significance in terms of architecture, structure, ornament, tradition, mythology, representation, etc.   How does this become manifest in the examples that we studied in the lectures/readings?  Identify  specific examples of the use of columns in specific buildings.      Rome: Major Concepts    Etruscan origins:  Know the major characteristics and important buildings from the Etruscan era.  What  were some of the concepts/ideas that remained constant in the Roman Era?    Materiality:  what were the primary materials used in Roman construction?  How did these materials  influence the structure, form, and overall appearance of these buildings?  What are some specific  examples that discuss this idea?      Structure:  The Romans developed many sophisticated structural elements that were essential to the  architecture of the civilization.  What were these elements?  In what buildings do they appear?
