Matching Matching Study Guide Midterm #2 Carl Jung  Analytical Psychology o A complex, esoteric, and obscure orientation. o Drawn from various other fields besides Psychology in order to understand human functioning.  Collective Unconscious o A deposit of world processes embedded in the structure of the brain and the sympathetic nervous system that constitutes, in its totality, a sort of timeless and eternal world-image which counterbalances our conscious momentary picture of the world.  Personal Unconscious o The region next to the Ego. o Consists of all the forgotten experiences that have lost their intensity for some reason, possibly because of their unpleasantness. It also includes sense of impressions that are too weak to be perceived consciously.  Psyche o Jung referred to this as the Total Personality o It is where energy flows continuously in various directions.  Ego o A complex of representations which constitutes the centrum of the field of consciousness and appears to possess a very high degree of continuity and identity. o An aspect of the Psyche o Is a Complex  Complex o A collection of thoughts that are united, often by a common feeling.  Archetypes o Themes that have existed in all cultures throughout history. o Suggested that they are collective memories that are universal in nature because of our common evolution and brain structure.  Self o Considered the Final Goal of our Striving o It is the Archetypal potentiality in all of us. o Viewed as an innate blueprint that is capable of being realized.  Persona o A compromise between the demands of the environment and the necessities of the individual’s inner constitution. o The mask that we wear in order to function adequately in our relationships with other people.  Shadow o The darker side of our natures. Matching Matching Study Guide Midterm #2 o Represents the evil, unadapted, unconscious and inferior part of our psyches.  Anima (Female Archetype)/Animus (Male Archetype) o Anima is the Female Archetype within the Male o Animus is the Male Archetype within the Female  Life Process Energy o Libido is considered a Life Process Energy, of which sexual urges are only One aspect. o Psychic energy, like physical energy, is an abstraction representing something real that cannot be touched or felt but that we know exists through its effects.  Principle of Opposites o Once energy is created, it moves in a variety of directions. o It can be dissipated in outward behavior, or it can continue to move within the psyche, first in one direction then in another.  Principle of Equivalence o States that “for a given quantity of energy expended or consumed in bringing about a certain condition, an equal quantity of the same or another form of energy will appear elsewhere.” o An increase in some aspect of psychic functioning is met by a compensatory decrease in functioning in another part of the psyche.  Principle of Entropy o The process within the psyche whereby elements of unequal strength seek psychological equilibrium. o If energy is concentrated in the ego, tension will be generated in the psyche to move energy from the conscious to the unconscious in order to create a balance.  Transcendent Function o The process by which a conflict is resolved by bringing opposing forces into balance with each other through understanding. o Provides stability and balance to the various systems of the personality  Symbols o A representation of Psychic Fact.  Mandalas o Symbolic representation of the self or the world  Extraversion o Outgoing and relatively confident approach to life  Introversion o A retiring and reflective approach to life.  Inferior Characteristics o Unconscious  Dominant Characteristics o Conscious  Rational Functions
