Mortality among black children- They were not friends, they were taught like animals, to survive like animals. The harder they worked, the better they were treated. 22. Where slaves worked-women could work in the house, or field. Men worked in the field. 23. Family life of slaves- men acted as husbands, women acted as wives. They created their own community and culture. 24. Nat Turner- gathered revolting slaves. Killed 57 white men, women, and children. 25. Slave owners- 26. Southern defense of the slave system- It is needed to keep the cotton production kept up with the growing country. 27. How slavery affected everyone-1/3 of the south’s population was enslaved. The south depended on slavery for their cotton production. The north was completely against slavery (which caused conflict). 28. Free Soil Party- (Martin Van Buren) slavery not allowed in the territory. No African Americans in the territory. 29. Presidential campaign of 1848- Democrats adopted a platform that avoided a firm position on slavery in the territories. Whigs were anti-slavery. Free Soil Party’s platform was “free soli, free speech, free labor, and free men”. 30. the Great Debate of 1850- slave trade ended in Washington DC. Kansas-Nebraska Act- re-opened the issue of slavery in the expansion. 36. the American Party-“know nothing” anti-immigrant, anti-irish, anti-catholic. They were opposed to drinking. Party split over the slave issue. 37. the Republican Party- northern whigs, free-soilers, reformers. Minority wanted to do something about existing slavery. No southern support. 38. Bleeding Kansas- Kansas split 50/50 over slavery. Indians forced to leave. Election in dispute. John Brown lead a group w/ guns killing/fighting the pro- slavery men. 39. Dred Scott decision-Scott will remain a slave even though his owner is dead. 40. the Panic of 1857- mild recession. Caused mainly foreign. Sectionalism. 41. the Lincoln Douglas Debate- Lincoln wins the debate. 42. John Brown-hated slavery 43. Republican Party’s platform- “protection of American Industry” –the union must and shall be preserved – no secession. – no slavery in the expansion. 44. the Election of 1860- 4 candidates. The democratic party had a split party. Lincoln wins election. 45. Secession- The south secedes from the north. Jefferson Davis is elected president of the “new” nation. South Carolina was the first to secede. 46. Lincoln’s Inaugural Address- March 1816, cautious and moderate. 47. Upper Southern States-VA,AK,TN,NC join the confederacy after the fall of fort. Sumter. 48. Border States-DE,MD,KY,MO went to the union. 49. Comparative strengths of the North and the South- south had power over the cotton industry, without cotton. But the north had power over basically everything else. 50. European support for the war-Confederacy was going to boycott the sale of cotton to Europe to get them on their side.
