Review sheet Ch.1 -Digital literacy: the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate and create information using a range of digital technologies. - being able to use computers effectively. -A computer: An electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory. -Accepts data (input) -> processing -> produces information (output) -Types of computers: laptops, tablets, desktop, and server. -Input devices: a device used to input data into the computer to tell it what to do. -Keyboard -Point device: mouse, track pad -Microphone: talk to input - Scanner: light sensing input method -Output devices: Devices used to output a product once the computer has processed the information. -Monitors -Vibrators: through gaming pads -Headphones -Peripheral devices: All the things you can hook up to a computer. -Speakers. -HDMI cable -Power source -Storage devices: Takes in any information needed and keeps it as storage. -Hard drive -Solid state drive -Storage media: a device where information is stored on something other than the hard drive, and used to read and write data to and from the media. -Flash memory (flash drives) -Internet: World wide collection of networks that connects millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutes, and individuals. -Green computing: Involves reducing the electricity consumed and environmental waste generated when using a computer -Recycling -Use efficient hardware and software -Regulating manufacturing process -Software: A program that tells the computer what to do. Also called a program -Two main type of software- -System software: Operating systems (tells comp. how to run) -Application software: Software used to make your experience more productive. (Photoshop, iPhoto) -Communication device: hardware that of transfers items between computers, along with other devices. - WiFi -Satellite Internet service -Network: A collection of computers and devices connected together CH.2 Wired connection: A way to connect a device to the Internet using some sort of land line. -DSL: digital subscriber line -Fiber: the newest and fastest way to access the Internet. Up to 100 times faster than normal DSL -Wireless connection: Connecting to the internet without having to use a wire, to increase mobility. -WiFi -Mobile Broadband -Internet service provider (ISP): A business or organization that offers users access to the Internet and related services. -Sudden link -IP address: A sequence of numbers that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the Internet -Domain name: a text based name that corresponds to the IP address -Paradis is the domain name for my wireless router -DNS server: translates the domain name into its associated IP address. -World Wide Web: The service Available to users, such as Google.com *NO ONE INTETITY CONTROLS THE INTERNET* - WWW consortium: helps set ground rules for coding to help the Internet run better and more cohesively -Browser: Interprets the code from the World Wide Web and projects it in a way understandable way for the user. -Fire fox -Search engine: Software designed to find requested websites, pictures, webpages, videos, ETC. -Google -Ergonomics: a science devoted to finding the most efficient, most comfortable, and the most safety while in a working environment. CH.4 -Program: a series of related instructions, organized for a common purpose that tells the computer what to do and how to do it. -Word processing: allows users to create and manipulate documents. -Presentation software: allows user to create visual aids to improve a presentation. -Spreadsheet: allows users to organize data into rows, columns, and to preform calculations. -Database: storage organized in a way that will be easily accessible in the future. -Note taking software: enables users to write handwritten comments, drawings, or sketches anywhere on a page. -Software suite: Also known as a bundle, it is comprised of multiple software applications sold as a whole for one price. -Document Management software: allows user to keep track of cost, progress, and schedules of projects. -Media player: software that plays video files, through either streaming or downloading. -Youtube: a media player that streams video from the Internet -Firewall: protects and detects the computer from unauthorized incoming data. -Antivirus: Protects computers by detecting viruses within the storage media, memory, or incoming files. -Spyware: a program that is placed on a computer from an unknown source that collects data and sends it back to the unknown source. -Adware: a program that displays a pop-up window -Malware: software intended to corrupt a computer. -Spam: unsolicited emails -Phishing scam: are emails that look legitimate but in fact are only out to steal information. -Disk defragmenter: reorganizes files and unused space on a computer to help it run faster and more efficiently. -Compressed files: reduces the file size for better storage. -MP3: a compressed file of music that is easier to store more of on a storage device. Thumbnail: a small image that acts as a hyperlink to a larger version of that image. NEED A GREEN SCANTRON!!!!!
