These are the types of questions you will be expected to answer on the midterm exam - use them as your study guide. To receive extra credit, answer any one of the four starred (**) questions. Limit your answers to one page (either hand- or type-written), or less. No extra credit can be given for assignments that are turned in late. This assignment is worth 20 of the 100 extra credit points. STUDY QUESTIONS. SET 1. **1. Briefly describe the evolution of plate tectonic theory. Include in your answer what concepts preceded it and what evidence the proponents used. Describe the three major pieces of evidence supporting the hypothesis of plate tectonics (and sea floor spreading) and the scientists who made these discoveries. What new technologies were required to make these discoveries? 2. Succinctly describe the process of plate tectonics. Include in your answer the three types of plate boundaries. Describe the types of "natural hazards" that are associated with plate boundaries, and why they occur there. 3. Describe a possible mechanism responsible for moving the continents over the Earth's surface? In your discussion include the roles of the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. Where are the youngest rocks in the ocean's crust? The oldest? Why? **4. Describe the two ways that oceanic islands are formed. How was the Hawaiian chain formed, and what type of information can we get from studying these islands about the history of plate motions (and describe how we get it).
