CHAPTER 10 SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT GETTING STARTED The results of the election (is, are) very suprising. There (was, were) many complaints about the violent TV show. Everybody usually (gather, gathers) at the waterfront on the Fourth of July. Mistakes in Subject-Verb Agreement 1. Words between subject and verb.When words come between the subject and the verb: The breakfast cereals in the pantry are made mostly of sugar. Words between the subject and the verb (cont) It is highly important to require students to memorize prepositions early! Memorizing the list of prepositions will allow students to identify and exclude phrases that cannot contain the subject of the sentence. PREPOSITION LIST: See Page 172 in your textbook for a complete list of prepositions. EXAMPLES Inside the storage shed (is, are) the garden tools. At the street corner (was, were) two panhandlers. Where (is, are) the remote for the television. EXAMPLES (Cont.) Follow along as we go over the examples on Page 174 in your textbook. 3. Indefinite Pronouns Some indefinite pronouns always take singular verbs. (See the list of singular indefinite pronouns at the bottom of Pg. 174) EXAMPLES:  Some of the pie is gone.  Some of the teachers have a meeting this morning after class.  None of the marbles fell on the floor.  All of the delicious birthday cake is missing.  *These examples are not in your textbook. PRACTICE EXERCISES: Follow along as we review the exercises at the top of Page 175 in your textbook. 4. Compound Subjects Yoga and biking are great exercises. Ambition and good luck are the keys to his success. NOTE: When using “and” to join to subjects, the verb will always be plural.
