Claire Malroux, pen name of Josette Andrée Malroux, was born on September 3, 1925, in Albi (Tarn), France. She is a French poet, essayist, and translator. She has translated the works of poets such as Derek Walcott, Emily Dickinson, and Emily Bront into French. At the start of World War II, she was a teenager, and her father was a member of the French Resistance, which fought the Nazis. She has published a dozen poetry collections, including La Femme sans paroles (2006), Ni si lointain (2004), and Soleil de jadis: recit poeme (1998). Traces, sillons (2009), a journal-style look at process, and Chambre avec vue sur l'éternité (2005), which traces Malroux's literary relationship with Emily Dickinson, are two hybrid prose works she has published. Marilyn Hacker has translated four volumes of Malroux's poetry: Daybreak: New and Selected Poems (2020), Birds and Bison (Sheep Meadow Press, 2004), A Long-Gone Sun (2001), and Edge (2001). (Wake Forest University Press, 1996). Malroux has also translated American poets such as Marilyn Hacker, Henri Cole, Wallace Stevens, and Emily Dickinson into French. She has received numerous awards for her translation work. She currently resides in Paris. Eleanor M. Hamilton of Prairie Schooner wrote, "Malroux's poetry is a mirror she reaches through in search of what lies behind it," and added, "I find her poems stimulating and freeing." In the poem, “Every Morning” the poet simply wants us to know about the feeling of every morning light on her face and how every morning is a blessing. The curtain rising make certain to role in the heavenly play for one more day. She is there all by herself observing the darkness slowly vanishing away with the brightness of the day. The distant stars that look mesmerizing in the starry night also become invisible to our eyes which created a scenic view in the black night. The poet further talks about her shadow walking together without touching and bent against and within each other until evening. In the poem, “The diminishing number of lines” talks about how our life gets shorter and shorter we may also have to exit the stage at any time. In the poem, “The shadow grows, and flesh hollows itself out, another / Take your place. Step by step you leave yourself” means many people would consider themselves fortunate if they could leave in stages. Claire Malroux approaches old age and death with the serenity that her artwork confers her. Not everyone is as fortunate as she is. In the poem, “In October” talks about the different seasons and their changes. The smell of the carnal flowers lingering in the atmosphere resembles about the sensual character behind its fresh, white, floral face. Their features symbolize the purity of themselves which can be seen in the cold and harsh season. Despite of the change of the season, the flowers can blend themselves into such in flexible atmosphere. The poet also wants to depict that in this month even though there are challenges that everyone must face they are slowly adapting them to the current environment. The little birds continue their daily routine as usual and begin to scream sweetly in the morning time killing the silence. Every season carries its own unique beauty and the change of season is the routine that the nature has followed over these years. The changing season may occur meaninglessly weak from the far but the mechanism in which the seasons operate has never been neglected. In conclusion, this poem talks about aging and death. And how people are financial dependence on other. It talks about every morning is a blessing and how others are not fortunate as her. Hence, this poem also shows that in each and every change, one should continue and be able to settle even in the harsh cold weather and time. The love and mutual trust between each other can be seen to overcome such challenges in life.
