EMAIL: LKEMP@CAAD.MSSTATE.EDU SPRING 2012 COURSE DESCRIPTION and OBJECTIVES: This course introduces students to: The fundamental aesthetic, technical, and social issues in architecture; The buildings, architects, and theories that dominant architects and historians consider significant; The consequences of how architects practice; and The problems with and benefits of architecture for our current society. It provides an introduction to architecture and encourages critical thinking and appreciation. The individual engagement and responsibility to your built environment! CLASS FORMAT: This course is a web-based course. Content will be disseminated through online Powerpoints, readings, assignments and film. Note: You will need to read the following information in how to succeed in an online class. For most of you, this is your first online class. If you are familiar with online classes, this will be a good refresher for you. The information listed here is pertinent to your success as a student: http://www.aoce.msstate.edu/SRC/succeed.html. Additionally, the following link helps you get started on MyCourses, the web- based platform where you will access this class: http://www.aoce.msstate.edu/SRC/mycourses.html This link offers a tutorial for those of you who may be unfamiliar with MyCourses. CLASS POLICIES: Policies and procedures for handling Academic Misconduct (honesty) can be found at htttp://www.msstate.edu/web/security.html. Honor Code: As a Mississippi State University student I will conduct myself with honor and integrity at all times. I will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor will I accept the actions of those who do. See AOP 12.07 at http://msstate.edu/dept/audit/1207A.html for additional information. Note about the honor code: I take cheating very seriously- whether it is on a test or on an assignment. This includes plagiarism. I expect all work submitted and answers provided to tests to be your own. I will not hesitate to report honor code violations should they occur. GRADING: The course grading will be based on three scheduled examinations via MyCourses and three assignments submitted via MyCourses. The examinations and assignments are broken down by points as follows: Test 1: 60 pts 20% of grade Test 2: 60 pts 20% of grade Test 3: 60 pts 20% of grade Final Exam: 60 pts 20% of grade 3 assignments: 20 pts (6.6 pts/each) 20% of grade TOTAL 260pts 100% The course will be graded on the following scale: A=90-100, B=80-89, C= 70-79, D= 60-69, F= below 60 EXTRA CREDIT: There is one extra credit assignment built into the class. This is the ONLY extra credit available (so do not ask me for additional assignments or other favors should you find yourself needing to pull up your grade). The assignment is completely OPTIONAL and will be factored in as up to 10 extra points added to your lowest test score. The extra credit is due toward the end of the semester, but can be turned in whenever you get it done (if it is BEFORE the listed due date). This assignment is designed to be done at your own pace, so if you choose to get it done the first few weeks of class, that is perfectly fine. It is a lengthy assignment, so it would be in your best interest to begin this early on in the semester. The (optional) extra credit assignment will require you to check out from your local library or purchase ONE of the following books.
