COMPUTER SCIENCE 1005 SECTION W2B CRN544 SYLLABUS Spring 2012 – 3 CREDIT HOURS TITLE Computer Hardware, Software and Programming Concepts DESCRIPTION: This is an introductory course with a focus on computer technology. Topics covered include computer hardware and software, computer applications including spreadsheets and databases, operating systems, networking, and security and ethical issues in computing. Students will use the internet as a resource to study emerging technologies and for additional information on existing technologies such as popular operating systems. Students will learn about elementary programming concepts and languages. OBJECTIVES: To understand the function and architecture of computer hardware To understand the purpose of systems software with special emphasis on operating system functions and different types of operating systems. To understand the role and uses of applications software such document production software, e-mail, and other popular applications To develop an elementary understanding of the technologies of computer networking, programming concepts, programming languages and the history of computer systems To develop awareness of the ethical issues in computing and security issues associated with the use of local and global networks Develop basic technological proficiency and grow professionally by using digital computers (hardware. operating systems, applications and the Internet) by learning and using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and Access database applications TIME AND PLACE OF CLASS: CSCI1005-W2BCRN544 OnLine 10 Mar. to 3 May 2012. Textbooks: New Perspectives Computer Concepts 2011, by Parsons & Oja New Perspectives Microsoft Excel & Access 2010 Brief, by Carey, Parsons, Oja, Ageloff, Adamski, & Finnegan The above 2 Textbooks are bundled at the APSU Book store under ISBN: 9781111993474 A USB Flash Drive (minimum 2GB) Students are expected to use Word, Excel, Access and Power Point for Office 2010. All of the software is available in the student computer lab in CX 303 and the library. Course Organization: The course is accessed through D2L. When entering the D2L environment for the course the student should first read the News on the entry page. The next area to visit is Content in the Navbar across the top of the entry page. D2L areas that students should regularly visit are: • Content ( item in the Navbar across the top of the entry page) • contains modules and topics on course information, lecture notes, assignments, and links • DropBox (item in the Navbar across the top of the entry page) • contains an area to submit files for grading if indicated to do so in assignments • Grades (item in the Navbar across the top of the entry page) • contains the students gradebook • News (located on the entry page of the course) • contains announcements about instructor postings and student deadlines • Quizzes ( item in the Navbar across the top of the entry page) • contains links to quizzes and some assignment ATTENDANCE POLICY AND CLASS PARTICIPATION. Students are expected to attend all classes, arrive on time and participate in classroom discussions. Students are expected to remain in class until the class is finished unless extenuating circumstances such as illness requires the student to leave. If a student leaves class early, the instructor must be notified as to the reason that the student left. Any student who has not attended class and/or submitted assignments for a three week period will receive an FA grade. Any student who arrives late to class must see the instructor immediately after class or the student will be marked as absent. Class participation is strongly encouraged. In addition, each student is required to have a brief consultation with his/her instructor.
