About me: I have been teaching at Marshall University since 1990. My credentials include a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University where I studied operator theory and other topics in mathematics. I enjoy teaching very much. Lately I have been working with Mingo County math teachers on several projects. I also enjoy teaching mental math to anyone who is interested in. Course Materials and Online Resources Required: College Trigonometry, 6th Edition by Aufmann, Barker, and Nation. The book can be ordered online at The Marshall University Bookstore or at any other book seller of your choice. Strongly Recommended: Student Study Guide (Solutions to odd-numbered exercises). Strongly Recommended: A graphing calculator is recommended and will be permitted during exams. A TI-83 calculator or a compatible one is recommended. Most demonstrations in the textbook and in course materials are shown using a TI-83. There is a page containing some links to several online tutorials. See the “Online Resources” icon on the home page of the course. Objectives of the course:  To present a comprehensive development of trigonometry and some of the applications of trigonometry.  To help prepare students for courses in calculus and analytic geometry.  To help prepare students for study in areas such as physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, pharmacy, geology, and medicine. Objectives of the course:  Review of Topics from Algebra  Right Triangular Ratios  Trigonometric Functions  Graphs of Trigonometric Functions  Trigonometric Identities  Inverse Trigonometric Functions and Trigonometric Equations  Applications (Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, Vectors)  Trigonometric Functions and Complex Numbers  Polar Coordinates and Conic Sections (brief) Some helpful advice:  Begin by reading the text for each new section. The content in my lectures is not meant to replace the text, but to supplement it.  Look at my lectures for a guided tour through the section. Each lecture contains video clips of selected problems, web sites for more help, definitions and rules, worked out examples and explanations.  Try the assigned homework problems. Homework problems for each section are assigned at the end of that section in a separate file. Try some of them. You won’t Each Unit Examination (three exams) will be worth 20% of the semester grade. Quizzes will be worth 20% of the semester grade. The comprehensive final exam will be worth 20% of the semester grade. 90.00 – 100 = A 80.00 – 89.99 = B 70.00 – 79.99 = C 60.00 – 69.99 = D Below 60.00 = F Exams and Proctors All exams will be taken with the Assessments Tool. A proctor will be required for all exams, but not for quizzes. All exams are “closed book/closed notes.” But a graphing calculator is allowed. Each exam requires a different password to open it. Proctors should request passwords from the instructor (aluthge@marshall.edu) several days before an exam is to be administered. Homework quizzes are open book/open notes quizzes. These can be found on the menu bar under Assessments. It is the responsibility of the student to find a proctor to proctor his or her exams. Please fill out and email me the “Proctor Information Form” found on the homepage of the course. Do this immediately. You or your proctor can email the “Proctor Information Form’ at aluthge@marshall.edu or fax it to the number (304) 696 4646 (Attn: Aluthge). Do this immediately. On-Campus Requirements There is absolutely no requirement that you come to campus. You can communicate with me via the course Mail tool or the Who’s Online tool. All of your assignments are submitted electronically through the course Assignments Tool and all exams are timed and taken online through the Assessments Tool. Course Policies There are deadlines for the completion of each exam. Quizzes and exams will not be available after the deadlines. The course is divided into 3 units with exams at the end of each unit. A proctor in needed to administer each unit exam and the final exam. It is up to the student to find a proctor. Each proctor must be approved by the instructor before any passwords will be released. Qualified proctors include educators, librarians, ministers, work supervisors, and other reliable non-relatives. Please have your chosen proctor send an e-mail to me (aluthge@marshall.edu) saying that he/she agrees to be your proctor and stating his/her qualifications to be your proctor. Proctors should include your name and course in all e-mail correspondence. Resources Don’t hesitate to contact me directly with questions or concerns. You can reach me through the VISTA Mail Tool or if necessary by phone at 304.696.3050. Please don't let your questions hang out there and simmer.
