GEOG 4043, Spring 2005 FIRST TAKE-HOME EXAM (50 points) This exam is due by 5 pm on 11 March 2005. Submit the exam by email and be sure to attach the graphic created in question 1. The exam is open-book, meaning you can use paper and Web-based reference materials to answer the questions. However, the answers must be expressed in your own words and must represent your own work, unaided by other members of the class. If you must use a direct quote, be sure to list the source. 1. (5 points) I would like to use the following map in a website, but I need to edit it so that it is only 3 inches wide at 72 pixel/inch resolution. I also want the file as small as possible (in bytes) so that it loads quickly in the web page. The URL of the original is: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/iraq_pol_2004.jpg How small (in bytes of filesize) can you make this map and still be able to read the names of the countries bordering Iraq? You may use gif or jpg format for your final image, whichever works better. 2. (5 points) Select any two of the following file formats and, for each one, discuss: 1. What is the format for, how does it get its name, and is it a proprietary or public format 2. When would you use this format to publish files in the web? That is, what is the greatest advantage(s) of using this format? 3. What is the greatest disadvantage(s) of using this format to publish files in the web? File formats to choose from (pick two only): gif, jpg, pdf, doc, rtf, xml, html 3. (10 points) First read or review:  Cartwright, William. 1999. Development of Multimedia. In Multimedia Cartography, ed. William Cartwright, Michael P. Peterson, and Georg Gartner, pp. 11-30. Berlin: Springer-Verlag. Cartwright seems to stress the different types of media (CD, video disk, DVD) that cartographers have used for their experiments in multimedia cartography. But is this all? Hasn't cartography changed in other ways? Please give three examples of how Cartwright believes that multimedia techniques have changed cartography. Please be specific and give examples is useful.
