Male slave = more work than a female slave) Usually it was a portion Whenever you were done with your task, the res TERM 2 Gang System (19th Century) DEFINITION 2 Used on cotton plantation South Every slave works together, go out at dawn and be in the fields until dusk Not assigned an individual task, everyone worked together Very closely supervised, several overseers/drivers on horseback checking on the workers In order to utilize all the available workforce, they had a trash gang (young children/pregnant women/older slaves) go behind actual gang group, any cotton that was left, they were in charge of picking it, bringing water to the gang (make sure everyone was oc TERM 3 Denmark Vesey (1822) DEFINITION 3 Lived in Charleston, slave carpenter but had a specific skill Because he was in an urban area, he was able to set his own work schedule Whatever money he made, he got to keep part of it Wants to buy his freedom Goes to his master, if he gives him $600 hell be able to buy his freedom Buys a ticket in the lottery, WON! Went to his master and bought his freedom Tried to use the rest of his money to buy his wife/family but the master wouldnt sell them Decides if his master is not willing to sell his TERM 4 Nat Turner (1831) DEFINITION 4 Very religious child, people considered him to be a prophet 4-5 he would have visions of events that happened before he was born People in the black community started to see him as a religious mystic Decided he was going to run away, was successful Has a vision a month after he runs away Vision told him he needed to return to his master & the plantation where he came from A couple years later he sees really dark wet spots, looks like drops of blood to him Tells the other slaves about what hes seen (th TERM 5 American Anti-Slavery Society (1831) DEFINITION 5 Group that works against slavery in the south William Lloyd Garrison - from MA "The Liberator" - newspaper Published first issue January 1, 1831 William Lloyd Garrisons newspaper States in the very first issue that slavery is a crime and that slaveholders are criminals Says we can no longer appeal to southerners through religions means & that they have to take their fight elsewhere Make slaveholding a crime before they can go anywhere Wants immediate abolition Revolts made the front page in his newspa
