The concept of conditional sentences and the three different types based on the likelihood of the proposed action occurring. It also covers the tenses used in each type. For instance, if it's very likely, the if-clause uses the simple present tense, and the main clause uses the future tense. If it's rather unlikely but still possible, the if-clause uses the simple past tense, and the main clause uses 'would' before the verb. Lastly, if the action is impossible because the opportunity has passed, the if-clause uses the past perfect tense, and the main clause uses the future perfect conditional tense. Examples from d.h. Lawrence's lady chatterley's lover, philip roth's portnoy's complaint, and mary shelley's frankenstein are provided.
