English 1102 TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF READINGS AND ASSIGNMENTS Please note that all readings, assignments, and journal writings are due the class period following the day they are assigned. Note also that we may have additional readings, quizzes, assignments, and class activities not listed on this schedule. Providing you with this schedule should allow you to pace yourself so that you have enough time to complete each assignment to the best of your ability. How do the authors and pictures represent different ideas of what it means to "come home? Discuss assigned reading (Coming to Terms with Place) and Journal Writings Outside Class Assignments: • Read and annotate: Introduction to Chapter 3 (“Capturing Memorable Moments,” p. 220-224) and annotate pictures (p. 230-280). Other specific reading selections TBA. • Develop 2 questions/observations for class discussion • List and categorize as many "defining moments" that you can recall (political, social, developmental, educational, psychological, personal, etc) Do not list moments you do not feel comfortable sharing with the class as a whole! • Journal Writing: (Defining Moments)—Choose one of these defining moments and elaborate on the event. Explore the ways and reasons this moment is defining for you. How did this place in your time and memories shape what came after it? How did it affect your worldviews? What did you learn from it? Why is it important in the whole design of your life thus far? Tell a story and give us the purposeful details that bring us into the dimensions of this experience. Work to complicate through exploring the connections between observation and inference and narration and exposition. • Internet Image Research – Find 4 images from the Internet that represent "defining moments" for you. Outside Class Assignments: • Read and annotate: Looking Closer: Taking Pictures (p. 287-290)—“On Photography” (p. 292-294), Keep the Story with a Kodak (advertisement picture), “Viewfinder” (p. 297), “The Photograph” (p. 291) and all pictures. • Develop 2 questions/observations for class discussion • Journal Writing: Capturing Memorable Moments—Respond in writing to the reading selections. The writers in this section define the idea of photography and the ways you might capture a moment or reveal a character. They also talk about the ways that photographs become part of our memories and recording of events. Work with the ideas and particular passages (quote from the selections and refer specifically to the pictures) as you extend on their ideas with those of your own. • Photograph Assignment 4 (Capturing Memorable Moments): The authors in this section talk about the ways that a photo captures a moment or tells a story. Take 4 photos that do this as you explore your surroundings, your friends, your family or other subjects. • Photograph Assignment 5 (“Self-portrait”): For this photo assignment you might have to pair up with someone to help you. You will need to do a self-portrait series of 4 photos. These photos should be more than just head-shots. You should think about surroundings, objects and perspectives that give your audience an idea about something about you. How does our sense of identity relate to our immediate environment? • Develop 2 questions/observations for class discussion Week 8 (Feb. 28) Wednesday In-class: Discussion and in-class writing about “Figuring the Body” Outside Class Assignments: • Read and annotate “Average Attractions” (p.332-335) “Writing” exercises; you may use these exercises to brainstorm possible ideas to help to provide a focus for your thoughts. • Develop 2 questions/observations for class discussion Week 11(March 21) Wednesday In-class: • Discussion and in-class writing • Exploratory Research Topics; Research Methods • Discuss Final Writing Assignment for Portfolio2 (the writing prompt for this assignment follows): Allow the following question to guide (not limit) your writing: “How do your photographs/images and ideas from the readings in Chapters 4 (Embodying Identity), 5 (Producing America), 6 (Reading Icons), and 7 (Challenging Images ) influence your thoughts about identity?” As a writer you will have to make choices about which photographs/ideas from the readings speak to your own sense of identity; in other words, you will need to formulate a definite focus – a thesis. Outside Class Assignments: • Photograph Assignment 4 (Portfolio 2): Find 4 to 6 images (you may use the Internet, take photographs, or find images in magazines) that represent influential cultural icons that have personal meaning for you as an individual.
