The Blue Room Nafisa Rizvi The BlueRoom Characters Khan Bahadur  Qurut-ul-Ain husband and Zaib’s grandfather  He was very diligence, superior intelligence and educated person.  He was a lawyer who had reached the status of Judge at the age of 52, his career was forced upon him by his father.  After the death of his father acquire the lifestyle of a Nawab.  He demands,demand gourmet dishes, be cooked for him and indulged in fine wines and go hunting.  His wife pleaded and begged him to return to his practice but he cut her off.  Died of sudden Coronary failure.  Saadat Ali Khan  Brother of Bahadur Ali Khan who was only a few years older than Qasim and he had been born prematurely and physically slower than the rest of his brother.  Endowed and sexually robust.  Due to his sexual desires 14 years old daughter of maid was pregnant with the child of Saadat Ali.  Mother of young girl came to Qurat-ul-Ain and tell the truth, Qurat-ul-Ain was not entirely surprised but felt guilty.  Khan Bahadur aware that as long as Sadaat lived here, he would continue his lecherous way and there would be more victim.  Sadaat was sent off to Shiekh Ameer and he unhappily left the house.  After 12 years Sadaat died an instant dead when his horse tripped and he fell as his neck snapped. Qurut-ul-Ain  Khan Bahadur wife and Zaib’s grand mother.  She was not one for sentimentality and it was a rare occasion when she showed any sign of emotion. ( Treated Jahanara as her daughter)  After her husband’s death she decided to step into her husband’s shoes as head of the household and was determined to make a job of it.  She passed judgment with so much insight, wisdom and common sense that it was difficult to find better solutions to the problem extended before her.  When Zaib’s tells her plan of shifting with her siblings then she says “If you cut yourself off from your roots, you will bleed!”  She died at the age of 83. Jahanara  Qasim Ali Khan’s wife and Zaib’s mother.  She was educated but dignified women who kept to her purdah.  She was superstitious. (Thursday afternoon communal prayer, Wednesday afternoon niaz with kheer and puri)  She was the one who always had a sharp eyes on her daughter for her extraordinary power.  She was not happy with Zaib's marriage, she always felt that Zaib has been destined for something better and also her other childern will have not suffer opressive imposition.  Jahanara lived in Shahi Manzil after the death of her mother in-law.  She died due to sudden coronary failure after seven month of the death of her mother in law. Zaibunnisa  Protagonist of the novel lived in Shahi Manzil.  Belonged to a prominent family of Jahangirabad (Dera Murshid)  Zaib has extrordinary powers.  “The little wise girl” as her uncle Asad called her.  Her eyes would glaze over while directly looking at people and through them. It was an uncanny, piercing gaze and it made people nervous.  At the age of 11 she used her power against her cousin Adeel who was stroking her.  One afternoon , a black ladder was spotted coiled in the corner of her grandmother’s room. Zaib began to stare it sensing her presence snake raised its head and poor creature turned around and slithered away. This incident was only witnessed by her brother. Zaibunnisa  Discover Blue room in the house where four walls of the room were painted aquamarine blue unlike the walls in the rest of house.  The walls of the Blue room start talking with Zaib.  The walls of the blue room tell her about the things they had seen, the words they had heard, spoken, witness birth, marriages, deaths, act of generosity, moments of glory, revelations of secret, the horrors they had encountered since they have been built.  The another effect on Zaib with the passing of time the more she learned, the older she grew. She was seventeen but she looked thirty.  Zaib uses her extraordinary power when her father was kidnapped to find him. She uses her visionary power. She projected herself from one place to another. Shiekh Murtaza Ameer  He married Zaibunnisa. He respect Zaib and made excuses for her tried to put off the issue in front of her mother.  He loved Zaib unconditionally and remain devoted to him with the rest of his life.  Murtaza spend his time with Zaib at the tea breaking the stereotypes that men don’t spend their valuable time with their wives.  Recieved a brutal punishment from his father at the age of ten where he had not commit a mistake, his brother had started the fire and he had been an innocent on- looker.  He was suffered from a fainted spells.  He was protected by the four blue men just because of his wife. Shiekh Murtaza Ameer  He has some imaginary friends.  He leave his house for the protection of Zaibunnisa and first shift in-laws house then they both planned to move to the city Shiekh Akbar & Jamila  Shiekh Akbar was the father of Murtza and Jamila was the mother of Mutaza.  Jamila was very authorative and frustrated.  Akbar was tall and big, he wore silver rings with huge semi- precious stone.  Akbar looked at Zaib and said that “You looked awfully old for a young girl”  Jamila was sometime outraged and confronted her daughter in law and abused her.  Both of them are cruel, spiteful, and malevolent people.  Shiekh Akbar prisoned in the jail for their acts
