CRITICAL THEORY AND THE VISUAL ARTS AVT 472 001 Instructor: Thomas Stanley Due: 12/04/08 Final Project Your analysis must be based on a single work or set of works that you have created. Sets or collections should be united structurally or thematically. All types of creative production are available for analysis. It does not have to be your primary concentration in AVT. Answer question number one and two of the remaining questions (i.e., 2-4) below in the context of an analysis of your chosen work(s). Remember that this paper is in lieu of a final exam, therefore think of it as an open book exam – an opportunity to indicate that you can apply the concepts covered in the class to a real world situation. Do feel free to support your analysis with any of the assigned readings and related sources. I will expect work of the highest caliber (i.e., A- work) to incorporate at least one unassigned author or reading that is germane to the theoretical questions at hand. Your paper should use the format we adopted at the beginning of the semester. It should be 6-9 pages long. It must adhere to the following structure: In the first section you should carefully identify, place, and describe the subject of your analysis. Clearly and succinctly, try to let me know what you know of the basic facts about the art you have chosen and the context of its presentation. This would include a synopsis of any statements or other literature that accompanies the art. Next, state the questions you will be addressing and provide a summary of the theoretical arguments that you will use to support your work. Finally, proceed with your analysis. In what manner and to what extent did you intend your work(s) as an argument, experiment, OR intervention? Describe the tension between your authorial agenda and the ability of your audience to extract alternate meanings. To what extent does the work confirm that the media is the message? In what ways is this axiom contradicted by your selected work? In what specific ways can your work be typified as modern, postmodern, or contemporary?
