The Effectiveness of Online Learning: A Comparative Analysis Between 1st and 2nd Quarter, High school final essays of Mathematics

The Filipino subject is an integral part of the country's curriculum. In this subject, students are taught about the essence of the Filipino language and make everyone appreciate the subject. With the pandemic going on however, some students are very much inept to fully adapt to the environment they're not yet used to, thus slowly losing their motivations. This research provides an understanding of how much a student has progressed throughout the adjustment period of online learning without losing the motivations they once had during face to face classes in a statistical manner. The findings of the research indicate that progress can be seen and that the respondents are slowly grasping onto the spark they once had during face to face classes. But it's not the case for those who are unable to go online due to the disadvantages they have with the grading system along with the limited resources given to them.

Statement of the Problem Due to the pandemic, new learning modalities in the world of education continue to have its adverse and favourable impacts on the lot of us. Learning difficulties are experienced by many students, such as the lack of resources, social isolation, and adaptability. It is roughly calculated that the sudden changes affected about 70% of the total student population worldwide (UNESCO, 2021). This research aims to understand the disparity between the first and second quarter grades made by the Grade 10 Students of Gen. Pio. del Pilar National High School in the subject of Filipino to deeply discern the progress they've made, and to measure how effective Online Learning is. It can also help in addressing further problems with the online system since the following academic school year will still be administered under the latter. In conclusion, dealing with this is a paramount subject matter as it is fixated on how the quality of education in the country operates in the subject of Filipino despite the virtual world we currently live in. 1. Was there a significant difference regarding the progress made by the Grade 10 students of GPDPNHS with their respective grades in Filipino? 2. Is the service provided by the modality of online education beneficial to the Grade 10 students of Bonifacio, Jacinto, and Tecson? II. Definition of Terms Alternative hypothesis - there is a significant relationship between two variables. Adverse - preventing success or development; harmful; unfavorable. Curriculum - the subjects that students take to study in a school. Disparity - a noticeable and usually significant difference or dissimilarity. MINI RESEARCH | 4 Equity - fairness or justice in the way people are treated. Filipino subject - Filipino subject is part of the school curriculum in the Philippines. Students will learn about the literature of Historical Filipino People who contributed to the Philippines; they also learn more about the national language. Mean - this is the average of a data set. Median - the middle of the arranged set of data in ascending order. Mode - this is the most occurring data in a data set. Null hypothesis - there is no significant relationship between two variables Pedagogical medium - a term that refers to the method of how teachers teach. Random sampling - randomly selecting a sample from a population to avoid bias. Each has an equal probability of being chosen. Significant - sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy. Variables - different characteristic values of anything such as weight, age, and etc. III. Hypothesis 1. There is a significant relationship in the abrupt shift of the new pedagogical medium for education in the performance of students. 2. There is no significant relationship in the abrupt shift of the new pedagogical medium for education in the performance of students. MINI RESEARCH | 5 Body of the Research I. Background of the Study In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic appalled the world, almost bringing it to an unprecedented stop. The COVID-19 virus then started to spread across the globe until it reached the Philippines, which had its first case on the 20th of January, 2020 (WHO, 2020). Causing many hurdles and adjustments, the government took action to establish new ways to equip students during the course of the pandemic, in its educational sector. The opening of classes was initially set on the 24th of August 2020, but it was moved on the 5th of October 2020. Briones said this was in consideration of Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite and Laguna which are under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until August 18 (INQUIRER, 2020). Just like any other population group's experience amid the pandemic, students are a population group that has experienced major and dramatic effects of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic during the period of the 1st quarter and thus huge changes in their everyday lives arose. Notwithstanding the fact that they are young and thus not in any of the specific risk groups at risk of coronavirus infection due to the serious health consequences it may bring, they're still humans and undergo a need of adjustment in order to adapt to the ever-changing world we live in. Throughout the first quarter, there was a period of adjustment. Many students were unable to go online because of the limitation of resources and other variables. Throughout the second quarter, students were more adjusted and more accepting of the new setting although problems with adjusting were inevitable and patent. MINI RESEARCH | 6 iv. Concluding statement After comprehensively and meticulously analyzing the data gathered, the researchers have come to a conclusion that the Grade 10 students of Gen. Pio del Pilar National High School made noteworthy and significant progress throughout their first and second quarter grades in the subject of Filipino, indicating the effectiveness of Online Learning. Not many students however, voiced out that they aren't that contended as they could've done a much better job in achieving what they envisioned their grades to be. Mainly because of the limited resources given to them, and the constant pressure of adapting to the environment they're not yet used to. As for the hypothesis, the researchers have concluded that accepting the alternative hypothesis is affirmative due to the reason that there is a significant relationship between the abrupt shift of the new pedagogical medium for education in the performance of students. b. Recommendations ● A study that gives primary attention to seeking ways on how a different grading system should be administered for those who are modular and blended students in order to develop a just and equitable grading method for those who are unable to go online. ● Establish a presence of feedback from teachers in order to track progress, know what needs to be improved, and have a spiritual source of motivation. ● A study that actively engages the students to fully appreciate the value of the Filipino subject in order to avoid dissatisfaction caused by their grades. ● Ensure the students' holistic development and well-being with regards to the amount of tasks given to them.
