The Grey Man Albert Fish, also known by his nickname “The Gray Man”, was a unique serial killer in that his victims were children, and he found pleasure in torturing himself. He was known for having his children help him torture him by having them beat him with a brush that had sharp nails fixed on it. He spent his early child hood years raised in an orphanage after his father passed away. Fish would often receive beatings in the orphanage, which gave him erections. This weird reaction to pain caused him to be teased by the other children. Fish spent his youth visiting public bathhouses to watch young boys undress and engaged in homosexual relations. Albert Fish later married Ann, had six children and they moved to New York City where his deviant behavior escalated. He preyed on little boys and continued to inflict self-pain. Fish was sent to jail for embezzlement where he engaged in homosexual relations with the other inmates, once he was out his wife left him for another man. Albert Fish was left to provide for his six children so he found various work at YMCAs and Homes for mentally challenged children. Fish was let go once mysterious things were being reported about the children. Fish later reported that he liked to kill mentally disabled children and black children because he felt they wouldn’t be missed as much. Fish’s first real documented victim was Billy Gaffney who he kidnapped, cooked, and ate. Albert Fish mutilated Billy and also drank his blood. Fish made sure to cook every part of Billy, certain parts thrown into a stew with vegetables and other parts cooked in the oven. He was not caught after this murder and instead the rumor came from this that there was a “Brooklyn Vampire” on the loose. After watching a documentary about Albert Fish on YouTube, I learned that this cannibalism could be explained and linked to feelings of being left and abandoned. In the documentary criminologist Jack Levin explains that people who participate in cannibalism often feel that by consuming someone’s remains that person is a part of them forever and won’t leave them. Albert Fish’s second victim was a girl unlike Billy Gaffney, but he killed and ate her just like little Billy. His second victim was named Grace Budd, his most infamous murder. Fish had won over Budd’s family by pretending to be a handy man needing work. After fish gained their trust Fish convinced the family to let Grace travel with him to a niece’s birthday party. Fish took Grace to a secluded house and then killed her. Fish took this murder to the next level by writing a letter to Grace Budd’s family describing in detail how he killed and ate her. This letter brought Fish to authority’s attention, and he was later arrested. Once in custody Fish confessed to killing five children including Grace Budd and Billy Gaffney. As stated in the YouTube video and other articles he was also was implicated for over a hundred molestations. Finally sentenced to the death penalty Albert Fish was stopped in 1936, receiving death by electrocution. Fish had inflicted pain on himself throughout the years with metal nails around his pelvic area, which had caused a short circuit the first time he was electrocuted, so he was
