My mother and I arrived to this modern country with very little money and plenty of hopes. Neither one of us spoke the language or understood the foreign ways of life. The streets were so clean, the people so neatly dressed, and the food was in abundance. As I grew older, the American culture began to influence me in ways that I didn't fully understand. American culture is spread around the world by the media, films, and music. Everything done here is publicized to be bigger and better than anywhere else. This attitude of always wanting to strive for greatness was contagious. Having Washington D.C as my first American address impacted my views on the military even more. Strolling along the National Mall and seeing all the memorials influenced by the fallen military's heroic efforts showed me how much respect they are given. I specifically remember the first time I observed the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The precision, attentiveness, and respect rendered by these soldiers solidified that I needed to join the military and be part of this force. American culture influenced me to protect this country and its freedoms that are so widely known throughout the globe. The most effective way I found to adapt to this new culture and face these changes was to become part of the culture. In every part of my naval career, I
