OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, 75% of the students will be able to: a) demonstrate a dialogue; b) distinguish the application of the be-verbs “is and are”; and c) test the students’ understanding regarding the usage of be-verbs “is and are”. A. Content Standard Demonstrates understanding of grammatical structures of English to be able to communicate effectively in oral and written forms. B. Performance Standard Shows proficiency in constructing grammatically correct sentences in varied theme-based oral and written activities. C. Learning Competency EN2G-Ig-h-2.3: Use plural form of regular nouns by adding /s/ or /es/ (e.g., dog, dogs; wish, wishes) ENG3G-Ila-3.8: Use the be-verbs (is, are, am, was, were) correctly in sentences. II. CONTENT Topic: Linking Verbs in Present Forms (Is and Are) Strategies: Direct Instruction, Interactive Discussion, Cooperation, Dialogue/Role play, Repetition, Replacement, Question Answer. III. Learning Resources Internet Materials: PPT, Printed Material IV. PROCEDURE A. Before the lesson 1) Preliminary Activity  Prayer Requesting everyone to please stand and may I request Mr. Ruben to lead the prayer.  Greetings and Orderliness Good morning, class! In the name of the father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. We thank you Lord for the gift of life, for guiding us, and for giving us wisdom. We ask for your guidance Oh, God as we have our discussion and you may shower us the ability to understand. In Jesus name we pray, Amen. Good morning, ma’am Christine! Good morning, once again! Please pick up the pieces of papers and arrange your chairs properly before you take your seats. Alright! Please be seated.  Checking of Attendance Let us first check your attendance. Kindly say “present” if your name is called. Arnilla, Jean Resza Balili, Windy Lou Cañadora, Khristel Joyce Tinaya, Mary Joy Everyone is present, Very Good! Reviewing Previous Lesson (The teacher will ask questions to the students regarding their past discussion) Before proceeding to our next topic, let us have a recap first about our past lesson. Who can tell me what we have discussed, yesterday? Yes, Elmar? Very Good! Now, who can define or still remember the difference between Subject and Predicate? Yes, Windy? Precisely, Windy! Thank you. Now, who can give me an example showing both subject and predicate in a sentence? Yes, Ruben? Very Good! Thank you, Ruben. It is good to know that you really have understood our topic yesterday. B. During the Lesson (Students will pick up pieces of papers and arrange their chairs) Present, ma’am! Present, ma’am! Present, ma’am! Present, ma’am! (Elmar raises his hand) Yesterday ma’am we talked about Subject and Predicate. (Windy raises her hand) Subject in the sentence is what (or whom) the sentence is about and the Predicate tells something about the subject. (Ruben raises his hand) The sentence “Marilyn is eating.” Marilyn is the subject and eating is the predicate. Yes, Cabardo? Very Good, Cabardo! (REPITITION) For you to practice or master fluency in using “is” as a linking verb, I want you to read after me and observe how the verb is being used in each sentence. Am I clear? Arrow is smart. Jaden is handsome. Trisha is gullible. She is a football player. He is a handsome man. Now, I want you to provide the correct verb in the following sentences. Am I clear? DCPC ___ a good school. Costa Leona ___ my home. Reading ___ my hobby. Taylor Swift ___ a well-known singer. Jean ___ a good opposer. (The teacher will give more sentences until the students will be fluent in using the said rule.) Very Good, class! Do you have questions? Okay, Since, you don’t have any questions, let us move on to the linking verb “are”. If Singular subjects take singular verbs. Then, plural subjects take plural verbs, too. For example: They are handsome. In this sentence, we used the linking verb “are” because the subject “They” is plural. Am I clear? (REPLACEMENT) SINGULAR TO PLURAL -Yes, ma’am. - Arrow is smart. - Jaden is handsome. -Trisha is gullible. -She is a football player. -He is a handsome man. Yes, ma’am! -DCPC is a good school. -Costa Leona is my home. -Reading is my hobby. -Taylor Swift is a well-known singer. -Jean is a good opposer. -None so far, ma’am. -Yes, ma’am! Direction: Identify the sentences if it is in plural or in singular form, then transform it into its opposite. EXAMPLE: Singular: The cat is eating. Plural: The cats are eating. The dog is barking. The pigs are walking in the jungle. The baby is crying. The plates are broken. The bird is singing. (The teacher will give more sentences until the students will be fluent in using the said rule.) 3.) Abstraction (Interactive Instruction/Discussion) Again, what is Linking Verb? Yes, Khristel? What are the linking verbs that we have discussed? Yes, Salindong? Precisely! Now, who can give me a sentence that uses “is” as a verb? Yes, Villamento? Very Good! Now, how about a sentence that uses “are” as a verb. Yes, Perocho? Very Good! Thank you. 4.) Application (Question Answer) (After the discussion, the teacher will give an activity to assess what the students have -The dogs are barking. -The pig is walking in the jungle. -The babies are crying. -The plate is broken. -The birds are singing. -(Khristel raises her hand) -Linking Verb ma’am connects the subject of a sentence to an adjective, noun or pronoun that completes the meaning of the verb. -(Salindong raises her hand) -Is and are, ma’am. -(Villamento raises her hand) -Anelyn Santos is a doctor. -(Perocho raises her hand) -Elena is writing an essay. -Yes, there is! learned.) (The teacher will ask the students and will give them two choices to answer; a. Yes, there is! b. Yes, there are!) 1. Is there a cup on the table? 2. Are there cups on the table? 3. Is there a pen on the table? 4. Are there pens on the table? 5. Is there a paper on the table? (The teacher will give more sentences until the students will be fluent in using the said rule.) 5.) Assessment A. After the lesson 1. Concluding Activity (Independent Study) (The teacher will ask the students to get 1 whole sheet of paper.) Direction: In your 1/2 sheet of paper, Write 5 sentences using singular linking verb (is), and other 5 sentences using plural verb (are) (After the students have answered the activity, the teacher will collect the papers.)
