Personification Analysis: Gorman uses imagery and personification in her poem ‘The Miracle of Morning’. Imagery is observed in the lines “I see a dad with a stroller taking a jog. / Across the street, a bright-eyed girl chases her dog. / A grandma on a porch fingers her rosaries. / She grins as her young neighbor brings her groceries.” (Gorman 5-8). Through imagery, Gorman paints a vivid picture in the reader’s mind, making one imagine the cheerful and active people who are enjoying the morning in her poem. Moreover, personification is found in the lines “So on this meaningful morn, we mourn and we mend. / Like light, we can't be broken, even when we bend.” (Gorman 13-14). The poet likens humans to a ray of light. Light can only bend; it can never be broken. Despite life’s difficulties that cause us to suffer or ‘bend’, we do not ‘break’ or, in other words, give up. Instead, we continue to ‘shine’ like light and keep going, making the best out of whatever may happen. Through these devices, Gorman poetically provides an answer to pandemic grief and offers the hope of healing from the impacts of COVID-19.
