The Pancreas: Guardian of Digestive and Endocrine Health, Summaries of Biology

The pancreas is a vital organ located in the abdomen, playing a crucial role in both the digestive and endocrine systems. It produces digestive enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in the small intestine, facilitating nutrient absorption. Additionally, the pancreas secretes important hormones, including insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood sugar levels and ensure energy balance in the body. Dysfunction of the pancreas can lead to serious health conditions such as pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and diabetes, highlighting its essential role in maintaining overall health and metabolic stability.

Pancreas By Ashmitha P Content โ— What is pancreas โ— Function of pancreas โ— Parts of the pancreas โ— Hormones it produces and its function โ— Thank you slide Parts of pancreas โ— Head: The head of the pancreas is the widest part of the organ and lies in the curve of the duodenum. It connects to the duodenum via the pancreatic duct. โ— Body: The body of the pancreas extends horizontally behind the stomach. It is located between the head and the tail of the pancreas. โ— Tail: The tail of the pancreas is the narrowest part of the organ and extends towards the spleen on the left side of the abdomen. โ— Pancreatic Duct: The main pancreatic duct runs through the length of the pancreas and carries pancreatic juices produced by the exocrine cells to the duodenum, where they aid in digestion. Hormones produced by pancreas Insulin Insulin helps regulate blood sugar levels by facilitating the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into cells, where it can be used for energy or stored for later use. Insulin also promotes the storage of excess glucose in the liver and muscles as glycogen. Produced by beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans Glucagon Glucagon acts in opposition to insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. It stimulates the liver to break down glycogen into glucose and release it into the bloodstream, increasing blood sugar levels when they are low. Produced by alpha cells in the Islets of Langerhans. Somatostatin Somatostatin regulates the secretion of both insulin and glucagon, helping to maintain stable blood sugar levels. It also inhibits the release of other hormones, such as growth hormone and gastrin. Produced by delta cells in the Islets of Langerhans. Islets : small isolated groups of the hormones producing cells They secrete hormones into the bloodstream. โ€” Thank You _
