The Stoichiometric Decomposition of Baking Soda Introduction: When baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is heated it undergoes decomposition. Listed below are three possible reactions that could represent the decomposition of baking soda. The goal of this lab is for you to experimentally determine which of these three reactions is correct. Your job is to use stoichiometry to determine which decomposition reaction takes place. Procedure: Weigh out between 1.5 g to 3.0 g of baking soda and place it in a clean dry preweighed crucible. Record the exact weight. Heat the crucible and its contents with a Bunsen burner for ten minutes. Use a spatula to carefully break up any clumps that form as the heating proceeds. The clumps only have to be broken up once during the heating process. Let the crucible cool for five minutes. Once the crucible has cooled to room temperature reweigh it and record its exact weight. Data Mass of empty crucible Mass of baking soda Mass of crucible + solid (after heating) Mass of solid left after heating Calculations and Questions: Translate each of the three proposed reactions into balanced equations. Write the balanced equation below its word description. Reaction I : solid sodium bicarbonate  solid sodium hydroxide + carbon dioxide gas Reaction II : solid sodium bicarbonate  solid sodium oxide + carbon dioxide gas + water gas Reaction III: solid sodium bicarbonate  solid sodium carbonate + carbon dioxide gas + water gas
