Maya Angelou Analysis Why did Maya Angelou change her name? - She changed her professional name to match her childhood name and her husband’s name, Anastasios Angelopoulos. What made her different from others? - Even after facing so much trauma in her life, and working odd jobs, she made herself famous and successful. Facing racism, sexism, and her trauma at the same time, she managed to break through into the world of poetry. - She was a black female in the mid 1900s, which is no small feat for a female, let alone one that is colored What do you like about Maya Angelou - Maya was strong-willed and never gave up. She struggled a lot, but eventually she overcame her selective mutism and broke through social barriers to make herself not just capable of living a normal life, but one that was quite luxurious. She was also a civil rights activist, spreading awareness for others who might’ve faced similar to what she had. The Poem - In and Out of Time The sun has come. The mist has gone. We see in the distance... our long way home. I was always yours to have. You were always mine. We have loved each other in and out of time. When the first stone looked up at the blazing sun and the first tree struggled up from the forest floor I had always loved you more. You freed your braids... gave your hair to the breeze. It hummed like a hive of honey bees. I reached in the mass for the sweet honey comb there... Mmmm... God how I love your hair. You saw me bludgeoned by circumstance. Lost, injured, hurt by chance. I screamed to the heavens... loudly screamed... Trying to change our nightmares into dreams... The sun has come. The mist has gone. We see in the distance our long way home. I was always yours to have. You were always mine. We have loved each other in and out in and out in and out of time. Theme This poem unleashes themes of love, disagreements, and relationships. Throughout the poem, there is no clear definition of their relationship and struggles they both overcame. However, we can clearly make out that their love for this person is long lasting and can overcome any struggles. Literary Devices There were three major literary devices used in the poem 1) Metaphor: Basically, a metaphor is a comparison between two unlike things that does not use “Like” or “As” .In this poem, Angelou uses metaphor while comparing the listener's hair to a beehive into which the listener reaches for the “sweet honey comb there.” 2) Alliteration: It is repetition that occurs when poets add same consonant sounds in the beginning of multiple words. In this poem, we can spot alliteration in line 13 “ It hummed like a hive of honey bees. 3) Enjambment: It is when a poet ends (cuts off) a line before its natural stopping point. In this poem, there is an enjambment between lines eight and nine and lines twenty-five and twenty-six. Poem Type and Structure ● The poem does not follow an absolute rhyming scheme, but there are multiple lines that rhyme with each other, such as “circumstance” / ”chance”, “there” / “hair”, etc. ● The poem is only a single stanza, containing 28 lines of beautifully written work ● The lines consist of 4 - 12 syllables
