Momentum -These are two important concepts in physics particularly in the study of motion. Definition of Momentum: • Momentum is the product of an object's mass(m) and its velocity (v) • It is a vector quantity, which means it has both magnitude and direction • Mathematical formula: Momentum =mass×velocity (p=m×v) • The SI units of Momentum is kilogram-meters per second (Kg•m/s) • Momentum is conserved in a closed system, which means that the total Momentum of the system remains constant unless acted upon by an external Force and this principle is known as the law of conservation of Momentum. Deriving Momentum • To derive Momentum, we start with newton’s second law which states that the force (F) acting on an object is equal to the rate of change of its Momentum (dp/dt) with respect to the time F= dp/dt. • Now let’s consider an object with a constant mass(m), in this case mass is not changing with time ,so we can Take it out of the derivative: F=m.dv/dt • Rearrange the equation F=ma, where a is the acceleration of the object which is the rate of velocity (dv/dt) , now if we multiply both sides of the equation by dt,we get: F.dt=m.dv • This equation represents the force applied over a small time interval, dt is equal to the change in Momentum (dp) so dp=F.dt • Intergrating both sides over the entire time interval , we get dp =F.dt this gives us the formula p=m.v Compiled by Thembelihle Shange
