For others, unfortunately, shopping can spiral out of control and become as serious. Compulsive shopping and spending are described as a pattern of chronic, repetitive purchasing that becomes difficult to stop and ultimately results in harmful consequences. Compulsive shopping is similar to other addictive behaviors and has some characteristics of alcoholism, gambling, and overeating addictions. A person with a shopping addiction may: obsess over making purchases on a daily or weekly basis, shop to cope with stress, feel intense euphoria or excitement after making purchases, buy unnecessary things, feel regret or remorse over purchases, but continue to shop, be unable to pay off debt or manage money Pay in cash You’ll be much less likely to go on a compulsive spending binge because you’ve got a limited amount of money to spend. Track your spending It helps you become more conscious of your spending and helps you stay committed to changing your compulsive spending behavior. Shopping addiction can be as distressing as any other addiction. But there is hope, and support from those around you can help you to control your spending. Remember, you are a worthwhile person, no matter how much or how little you own.
