A Case Study on the Discrimination that artsen because of our Attitude in promoting our own Culture: Coping wth the Bisaya Accent ABEGAIL JOY M. LAPITAN INTRODUCTION: The Cebuano or colloquially referred to by most of its speakers as Bisaya or Binisaya is an Austronesian language, spoken in the southern Phlippines. This language flourishes in Central Visayas, western part of Eastern Visayas and on most of Mindanao. It originated on the Island of Cebu, and is now spoken primarily by various Visayan ethnolinguistic groups or primarily the Cebuanos. When the Cebuanos (Visayan) seek to find more opportunittes and more convenient Ilfe, they use to go to Metro Manila to find their fate. It is undeniable right now that the number of Cebuanos living in Metro Manita gradually Increases that's why their accent is heard most of the time. But it is very obvious also that the life of the Visayans In Metro Manlla isn't that easy especially when it comes to the language and accent they have. Their pronunciations and accent is the reason why they struggle in their Ilves as what discrimination brought them, everytime a Visayan rolls their accent, someone else mimics and giggles it. OBJECTIVES OF THE CASE STUDY There will be no unity in the absence of equality and there will never be happiness If discrimination still exist. We need to resolve this issue about the struggle of the Visayan people to make non-Vsayan citizens accept their local language and accent. The objectives of the Case Study are: ¢ To stop the discrimination to the Visayan due to their Bisaya Accent. © To promote our variety of culture equally in our community. © To help both the Visayans and the people around them to accept and understand each other's culture. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE Discrimination is what the Cebuanos get due to their Language/Dialect and Accent. Their tamous , "o" to "u" and vice versa has been the pronunciation which is the switching of vowel sounds: cynosure of jokes and derision. Especially when they moved to the big city of Metro Manila to find their fate, shame is what they get, sarcastic laughs is what they heard and It was discrimination that they found not a convenient ife. It is a very big deal for the urban people to cope with the accent of this poor rural people. Example is the Visayan native named Lisa, a housewife who has lived in Cebu for more than 30 years decided to move to the city of Metrapolitan Manila. She had made a very hard adjustment to the language of the urban people or the Tagalog language. It was very tough for a woman who was born and raised in Samal island in the province at Davao del Norte to learn the Tagalog Language. Their family decided to move to manila only to give their two daughters the good education they deserved. According to Lisa, "Being a Bisaya in Metro Manila was very challenging. especially during the first six months." She sometimes get a headache just to converse in Tagalog with their neighbors and people at market, an evidence of how eager she was just to adjust with the new environment they lived unilike the people around them. Due to Lisa's experiences she felt that Bisaya was Inferior to Tagalog. Everytime she tries her best to talk using Tagalog that results to quirky pronunciation, she hear mocking comments about her language and accent. The most disparaging remark that she has ever heard is that Bisaya is "low-class" compared to Tagalog. It is obviously a manifesto of discrimination to the Cebuanos. How can we achieve unity and equallity in our countrymen if k is really hard for the most ol us to cope and accept the variety of culture that we have particularty the languages/dialects that we had as being argued in this case. PROPOSED SOLUTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS This Issue about the Bisaya Accent is such an ignominy to our Fillpino Character. We Filpino are widely known for our respect to our fellowmen. So we must not let this kssue rulns our Image. We must solve this issue as soon as possible. For me, we can solve this issue in a two-way solution. It's like do this for me and rl do that for you. Just IIke what Lisa did for her to adjust and cope with the Tagalog language, in return, we the non- Visayan people must also do our best to cope and adjust to the language and accent they have. Anather is we can also use the powertul hand of the law-makers to enforce a law with a primary objective of ending the discrimination due to the different raised and cultures that we have. Maybe through this law, Visayans can have their treedom trom discrimination and everyone of us can cope to the Bisaya Language and accent. As | have said earlier, there will be no unity in the absence of equality end there will never be happiness if discrimination still exists. So | recommend that instead of discriminating others due to their
