Road to War in Europe, 1936-1939  Hitler-Stalin Agreement, August 1939 o Non-Aggression Pact  WWII starts in Europe o Hitler invades Poland on 1 Sept 1939  England and France declare war two days later o Hitler and Stalin crush Poland and divide it  Poland would be split between Russia and Germany  Sitting war, 1939-1940 o French vs. Germans? Lightning war.  Hitler’s blitzkrieg unleashed into western Europe o By June 1940, Denmark, Norway, Benelux, and France fall 3. World War II in Europe  Battle of Britain begins in August 1940  Axis Pact, September 1940 Germany, Italy, and Japan sign a military treaty.  Election of 1940 o Democrats choose Roosevelt for a third term o Republicans pick W. Wilkie of NY o Roosevelt gets 55%, 449 to 45%, 82  Arsenal of Democracy, late December 1940  Hitler’s Mistake number 1: British were pinned down. But Hitler decided to finish France off. The British got off of the Island through boats. Hitler should have killed all the British.  Hitler’s Mistake number 2: Midnight bombing in Berlin, Hitler promised they would never be bombed. Germans were bombing British. Dumbass.  Hitler’s Mistake number 3: His biggest mistake! They invaded Russia and lost 70% of his troops.  Hitler’s Mistake number 4: Declaring war on US  Feb-May, 1941: Hitler takes the Balkans through Greece  In June, 1941 he violates the Non-Aggression Pact and attacks Soviet Russia  August, 1941: Roosevelt and Churchill draw up the Atlantic Charter. Decide what the war aims will be. Brings up the UN.
