University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine Proposal of Activities • "A Day in the Life" series by early career clinical academics. Six seminars per annum. Learn about their research and experience of starting on a clinical academic pathway. Developed in collaboration with the postgraduate Clinical Academic Training Office. • Frontiers in Research seminar series. Six seminars per annum. Highlighting different clinical academic pathways and the range of research being conducted across the campus. In consultation with the Cambridge University Students' Clinical Research Society (CUSCRS). The series will include talks on: - Big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence: delivered in collaboration with the Cambridge Big Data Strategic Research Initiative and the Centre for Mathematical Imaging in Healthcare. - Quality improvement research: delivered in collaboration with The Healthcare Improvement Studies (THIS) Institute at the University of Cambridge. - Research in medical education: delivered in collaboration with faculty from the Master’s in Medical Education. - Genomic medicine: research and future clinical applications of genomic information and technologies: delivered in collaboration with faculty on the Master’s in Genomic Medicine. - Population-level research: delivered in collaboration with faculty from the University’s Department of Public Health and Primary Care, and the Master’s in Public Health. - Working in industry: delivered in collaboration with clinical academics from GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, and commercial healthcare spin- outs/entrepreneurships. • "Seeing is Believing" - integrating diversity and equality. Speakers at seminars and talks will be selected with the aim of representing the diversity amongst clinical academics. Each session of the “A Day in the Life” series will incorporate a discussion about the early career researchers’ background and training, as well consideration of how they integrate this alongside their life outside of clinical academia. • "Reflections on Research" articles. Work with the Cambridge Medical Journal to include regular interviews with clinical academics of all levels. Highlight the diversity in backgrounds of clinical academics. INSPIRE is coordinated by the Academy of Medical Sciences and supported by the Wellcome Trust. INSPIRE activities are designed and delivered locally by individual medical schools. • INSPIRE Wall of Fame. Dedicated INSPIRE display in the School of Clinical Medicine to illustrate the range of research work being done by medical students. • Cambridge INSPIRE/CUSCRS social media. New social media presence on Twitter and Instagram to promote research outputs of the student body. Also complement the physical promotion in the INSPIRE Wall of Fame. The effectiveness of the social media presence will be evaluated using platform analytics. • The "Nuts and Bolts of Research" seminar series. Learn about the practicalities of getting started in clinical research, including how to apply for research ethics, how to apply for funding, how to find a supervisor, and how to prepare a fellowship application. • Medical Student Systematic Review Group. Provides students with basic training in systematic review methods, opportunities to contribute to systematic reviews as co-authors on research publications, and opportunities to share knowledge, skills, and experience and practice their presentation skills in a supportive environment. Sessions will run over a six-month period and include three lecture- based sessions. • Student Selected Component Success Workshop. Established workshop organised and delivered by the CUSCRS Committee. Provides near-peer talks (delivered by fifth year students) providing practical advice on organising the SSC, illustrations of what can be achieved during this rotation, and offering a forum for students to ask questions about the SSC process. • Summer Research Information Evening. This workshop targets pre-clinical medical students in the first and second years of the medical course. Aims to increase early-stage student engagement with research through a series of talks by students and researchers. The workshop also aims to facilitate networking between attendees and researchers across the University. • Applying to the Academic Foundation Programme Workshop. How to improve their application for an Academic Foundation Programme, in particular how to prepare their research curriculum vitae, how to demonstrate commitment to research, how to approach the application form, and prepare for interview. Talks are delivered by Academic Foundation Programme trainees.
