Preservice Program Policies Policy on Grading The following University-wide grade descriptors apply in the Faculty of Education: A+ 90-100 One could scarcely expect better from students at this level A 80-89 Superior work which is clearly above average (for students at this level) B 70-79 Good work, meeting all requirements, and eminently satisfactory (for students at this level) C 60-69 Competent work but not of the standard normally expected in this Faculty D 50-59 Inferior work which is clearly deficient (for students at this level) but minimally acceptable F below 50 Fail Assignments, tests, and examinations must be evaluated in terms of what can be expected of students in a post-degree, professional program. To warrant an “A”, work must be superior to that done by most students at this level. “A+” should be reserved for work that is truly outstanding and of a quality only occasionally seen among students at this level. The University does not specify values for A-, B+, B-, and so on (A+ is the only letter grade with a specified percentage range). Therefore, if Faculty members choose to assign plus or minus qualifiers when using letter grades, it is important to tell students that the values attached to these qualifiers may not exactly match the values for such qualifiers as used by other instructors. Instructors who use rubrics must ensure that letter grades and percentage scores provided in the rubric are consistent with University guidelines. In accordance with University policy, Deans and their designates have the responsibility of monitoring and approving final grades, and the authority to require the moderation and revision of grades (downwards or upwards) if class standings appear to be anomalous.
