GRG-374 Frontiers in Geography Project 1 Using the Internet to Access Information about Lockhart, TX The purpose of this project is to look closely at the population of the city of Lockhart. You will identify major ethnic and socio-economic divisions in this urban space by referring to the data on thematic maps you download from American FactFinder (a service of the US Census). You will use this information when you are in the “field,” as a guide for interpreting what you see on the ground. Warning: follow the directions exactly! You may want to check them off as you go. 1. go to www.census.gov 2. click link in sidebar to go to American FactFinder 3. click on maps and geography button at center left 4. near top, click on Thematic Maps 5. Near the top center, in blue, and underlined you will see the word geography; click on it 6. in box marked “select a geographic type” select place 7. after “select a state” pick Texas 8. in the place box pick Lockhart City 9. finally click show result 10.Find a scroll-bar about 1/3 of the way down and change from “census tract” to block 11. In the blue, underlined list where you clicked on "geography" before now click on themes 12.Select TM-P004A."percent of persons who are white alone: 2000." Be careful that you don’t choose TM-P001A “persons who are white alone” (why not?) Click on the next or show results button, not on “map it” 13. If the map does not show up at level 4 of the zoom bar at the right, click on the 4! 14.You can either print the whole page or just the map and legend. If you cannot print in color, save the map and legend as images (right click on your mouse). Be sure you use self-evident names like whitepopA and whitepopB. 15.Select "themes" again and this time pick TM-P004B, "percent of persons who are Black or African American alone: 2000" 16.Save or print 17.Repeat with TM-P004B, "Percent of persons who are Hispanic or Latino of any race" 18.Repeat with: “housing units that are renter occupied: 2000" 19.Finally, click on data sets with thematic maps (in same list as "themes" but to the left). When a window appears, select Census 2000 Summary File 3. This resets everything so you will need to reset it. 20.Again select place, then Texas, then Lockhart city
