What is Visual Arts? Pertains to painting and sculpture Topic: The National Artists of the Philippines for Visual Arts Objectives: Explains Filipino artists’ roles and Identify their contribution to contemporary Arts. CAR11/12CAP-oc-e-5 -Identify the National Artists for Visual Arts -Explain the contributions of these National Artists. -Discuss the different styles and techniques these visual artists have used -Explain Filipino artist’s role and Identify their contribution to contemporary arts. Filipino visual artists use native forms and subjects but with the use of foreign styles and techniques. Along with the inspirations from other countries, Spanish influences is still apparent in the works of the Filipinos. Some contemporary visual artists have been educated and trained abroad, introducing in the country different movements in the world of art. Why is the Spanish influence very strong in the works of Filipino Visual artists? How are visual artists able to merge the local and the foreign? National Artist for visual Arts 1.Napoleon Abueva 1930- Year of Conferment:1976 -born in Tagbilaran, Bohol -considered the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture. Youngest awardee to receive the National Artist award 1991 "Siyam na Diwata "Magdangal" Sandugo Three Dancers 2.Ang Kiukok 1931-2005 Year of Conferment:2001 -born to immigrant Chinese parents Vicente Ang and Chin Lim. -one of the most talented and energetic figures who began his flourishing carrier during the 1960s. -his works continue to inspire and influence Filipinos You will be captivated by visual intensity and also be overwhelmed by its meaning. Art critics praise him for works which are cited by the NCCA.” imbued with nationalist fervor and sociological agenda.” -Some of his famous works: Geometric Landscape(1969) ,Dog Fight, Pieta (1962), –won a bronze medal in Saigon, and the Seated Figure(1979)- which was aunctioned at Singapore’s Sotheby’s. -most of his subjects were Filipino laborers in their everyday situations. -his painting depict(according to NCCA) the working class in “rough, bold impasto strokes and standing tall and singular in his advocacy and practice.” -some of his remarkable works of art: The Sketch, Poinsettia Girl, The Wrestlers, Portrait of the Professor, and the Japanese Girl. Who are the major influences in Victorio Edades’s Carrer? How is Edades work different from that of Fernando Amorsolo? What were Edade’s common subjects in his paintings? How did Edades Paint them? 4.Cesar Legaspi 1917 - 1994 Year of Conferment:1990 -pioneer of the Neorealist movement in the country. Neorealism – is a modern art movement that makes an artist take a subject and explore its unknown qualities. -his art paved the way to the birth of modern art in the Philippines. 5.Vicente S. Manansala 1910-1981 Year of Conferment:1981 -an extraordinary illustrator and cubist painter -born in Macabebe, Pampanga -his paintings depected the barrio and the city together and were often characterized, according to NCCA as “ visions of reality teering on the edge of abstraction.” -trained in Paris and at the Otis School of Drawing in Los Angeles. -his famous masterpiece: the Madonna of the Slums – represents a mother and child from the country. -his other canvasses: The Jeepney and Birdman, he combined the elements of provincial folk culture with the busy streets of the city. 6. Hernando R. Ocampo 1911-1978 Year of Conferment:1991 -self-taught painter, exceptional visual artist -his works are often praised to have ” provided an understanding and awareness of the harsh social realities in the country” -invented a new mode of perception that demonstrated the atmosphere and the wildlife of the Philippines. -study at the academia de San Fernando in Madrid.(a study grant provided by business tycoon Enrique Zobel de Ayala ) -his work is described by National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin as “ the rapture of a sensuality utterly in love with the earth, with the Philippine sun… -most of his works depicted the rich rural landscape of the Philippines. -some of his famous works: Rice Planting, Defence of a Filipina Woman’s Honor, Planting Rice( 1946) and Sunday Morning Going to Town(1958) 8. Carlos “Botong V. Francisco 1912-1969 Year of Conferment:1973 -commonly known as “Botong” -a muralist from Angono, Rizal -became famous because of his massive murals and for his outstanding depiction of historical pieces. -best masterpieces: Bagong Taon, Man with Guitar, Self-Portrait, and Cities of the Past. -his Black and White mural can be viewed in the hall of CCP’s Bulwagang Carlos V. Francisco (Little Theater) 10. Jerry Elizalde Navarro 1924-1999 Year of Conferment:1999 -born in Antique -both painter and sculptor -his other works include graphic design, printmaking, and mask-making in hardwood which “merge the human and the animal.” -He represented the country at the Sao Paolo Biennale in Brazil for Sculpture. -Some of his most illustrious works: I’m Sorry Jesus, I can’t Attend Christmas This Year; Homage to Dodjie Laurel; A flying Contraption for Mr. Icarus; Singkil; Is he the Man?; The Seasons. 12. Jose T. Joya 1931-1995 Year of Conferment:2003 -former dean of the college of Fine Arts of UP. -initiated abstract expressionism in the country. Abstract expressionism -is the use of the abstract style to convey strong emotional or expressive content. -his masterpieces showed”dynamic spontaneity” and “quick gestures” of action painting. -majority of his works were strongly influenced by the tropical landscapes of the country’s beautiful islands. -Some of his inspiring masterpieces: Nanking, Hills of Nikko, Mariveles, Beethoven Listening to the Blues, Cityscape, Granadean Arabesque and Biennial. 13. Benedicto “Bencab” R. Cabrera 1942 Year of Conferment:2006 -brilliant painter who has”upheld the primacy of drawing over the decorative color” -his first experience of the arts transpired through his elder siblings Salvador, who was already a recognized artist. Describe BenCab’s work as an artist? Name some of BenCab’s selected works. Who is BenCab’s “symbolic scavenger?” what does it represent? 14. Abdulmari Asia Imao 1936-2014 Year of Conferment:2006 -Native of Sulu -remarkable sculpture, painter, ceramist, photographer, writer, and cultural researcher. -his mentor were national Artists Guillermo Tolentino and Napoleon Abueva -he incorporated in his works native motifs and designs such as the sarimanok, the naga and the ukkil which has helped develop among ethnic groups trust and confidence essential for the development of a civilized society. -some of his notable works: The Industry Brass Mural and Mural Relief on Filmmaking in Manila City Hall GOD bless us!!! |
