Kevin Galarza 0816866 Prof. Corrigan CRJ-101-004 Wedding Cake Model of Criminal Justice The Wedding Cake Model was developed by a scholar by the name of Samuel Walker. Mr. Walker came up with this his theory while he was analyzing the judicial system. The Wedding Cake Model is made up of four categories or layers. Starting at the top with the most elite cases known as celebrated cases, moving down to a slightly larger cases consisting of serious felonies, the third layers is classified as lesser felonies, and lastly at the very bottom is the biggest portion containing misdemeanors. Each layer provides a more clear analysis of how they are dealt with in the Criminal Justice System. Celebrate cases are cases that are unusual or where there is a celebrity or high ranking official involved. These kinds of cases we all know and see because they get a lot of media attention. Since these cases are so elite and high profile they are undertaken in a way that is not typical in the Criminal Justice System. This requires certain factors to be taken into consideration. For example, there is the use of cameras in the court rooms. The second layer of our criminal wedding cake is where the serious felonies are located. Serious felonies are crimes that the defendant has committed which could cause them to be denied of being released out on bail. Serious felonies are handled under standard operation procedure and does not include the same external factors as celebrate cases. There is also a lesser chance that the defendant will enter into a plea agreement before trial.
