Task 1: Innovative and Strategic Thinking Course Code: C714.V2 and D081 Student Name: Sawyer Schaef Student ID:001249424 Date: April 3, 2021 Student Mentor Name: Jacqueline Hill A. Discuss aspects of the company from the provided scenario by doing the following: 1. Describe in detail how each of the following aspects from the scenario affect the company's decision-making process: • company culture • organizational structure • strategic direction, including mission and vision statements Company culture is often thought of as the values and beliefs of the organization, its leadership, and what is hoped for in regard to its employees. This fishing boat manufacturer’s culture is described as innovative. The mission statement for the company defines them as being “innovative.” They encourage innovation and creative ideas by employees by providing incentives. There has even been external industry consultation about product designs. Organizational structure essentially is the systematic foundation the company is built on. This manufacturing company is using a decentralized organizational structure, which is allowing for open communication and flexibility. They hold company founders and employees as equal partners, allowing for all ideas and potential product designs to be considered. Everyone in the company weighs in on decisions to ensure full company commitment. Mission and vision statements help to define the goals of the company. Mission statements focus more on how the company is currently operating and vision statements have the future in mind. The company has declared a mission statement of: “We will provide the most innovative customer-driven design and growth in the industry.” and vison statement of: “We will be the most sustainable company in the industry.” The decisions of the company will need to align with both statements, ultimately making the on investment. There is no competition for a foldable boat in India, producing an affordable product for 14 million fishermen, while lowering manufacturing costs, and allowing for further expansion and innovation of the company. a. The design process stages include empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test, and implement. In the empathize stage, the company will be performing research to gain a better understanding of how Indian fishermen are using their current nonmechanized boats and the problems resulting from that. In this stage, conversations with the hired fishermen will begin, so that their experiences can start to mold product design. During the define stage, all information gained from research is analyzed, and a focused problem statement is decided upon. Next, during the ideate stage, ideas are formulated, and discussions take place to determine possible resolutions to the problem statement. Prototyping is the stage in which the testing of some of the formulated ideas takes place, but testing is not on a final product. Initially, prototyping often involves failure, but with these failures, lessons and techniques are learned for the final product. The testing stage involves actual users and the prototype. A sample size of boats will be used with Indian fishermen for testing. They will evaluate and provide feedback. Slight changes may be needed to be made to the design, or new problems may be discovered. Finally, in the implement stage, the successful tested prototype is brought into production. Distribution and sales finally begin; however, the company’s work is not done. If the company wants to be customer-driven and sustainable; it will need to continually analyze customer needs, wants, and always look for means of improvement. b. The manufacturing company’s organizational structure and company culture could have both positive and negative effects on the design thinking process. The organizational structure is decentralized, allowing for shared decision-making and no hierarchy form of structure. The culture is innovative, employees are even offered incentives for creative ideas. While the structure and culture allow for ideas to be brought to attention more freely, there is a risk of losing time with too many ideas and not enough employees being in favor of any to form a decision. Company ethics is another key contributor to the design thinking process. The company’s ethical statement explains: “We will make decisions that are sustainable for customers and the environment.” Simply following the design thinking process, during the empathize stage, the company is evaluating potential future customers and their needs. During the define stage, there will be a need to create a human centric problem statement. 3. Discuss in detail how the company’s ethical statement from the scenario influences the market entry strategy. The company’s ethical statement states: “We will make decisions that are sustainable for customers and the environment.” The company is not only focusing on the needs of customers, but is also providing an eco-friendlier product. The endorsement by the National Fisheries Development Board is helping to fulfil corporate social responsibility by requiring the plastics used in manufacturing to be recycled products from India. The company has also stated its product will have zero environmental impact. The Indian business climate is thought to be open to new partnerships, in hopes of improving the fishing experience and preserving the natural ecosystem. This aligns with the company’s ethics when looking for entry into the market. The company is offering a fishing boat that is suitable for a wide range of fishermen, is non-mechanical, is eco-friendly, and will reduce waste in Indian landfills. This boat is also endorsed by the NFDB.
