April 25, 2007 What I learned… I learned that it is very important to take the quizzes as many times as you can before the due date. The questions on the quizzes come from a pool of questions from that chapter; therefore, the more times you take the quizzes, the more questions you can familiarize yourself with for the exams. It is very beneficial when taking the exams to have the quizzes with you because they are the exact same questions. Also, I learned that it is very important to complete the handouts that are given before each video is shown. There are a few questions on the exams from the videos shown in class. What I wish I would have known… When it comes to your country talk, make it interesting. Do not make it ridiculously long, nor cut it too short. Make sure to add fun facts about your country. (No one really cares about your country’s GDP or how many telephones they have.) Also, when it is time to give your speech, don’t be nervous. No one likes public speaking, so everyone is in the same boat. People enjoy listening to people who speak clearly and has interesting things to say. If you are so nervous that your voice is shaking, people tend to just feel bad and embarrassed for you and don’t pay attention to what you have to say. So when you are giving your country talk, pretend you are just talking to your friends. Anastasia Umanets International Marketing April 26, 2007 What I learned I think the most important part that will benefit me in the future is learning about the cultural aspect of marketing, and how it is important not only to be knowledgeable in the field of your choice, but also to be familiar with other cultures. It is obvious that we cannot be experts and know everything about any given culture, but nevertheless we have to at least try to understand the differences and be willing to accept them. That, I think, is a key to a success in any business endeavors. I wish I had known One thing I wish I had known is how many quizzes we have to take. I don’t think I have realized it until later, that when you sum up the few points that those quizzes carry, you actually end up with quite a bit. So, that will be my advice - take time to do those quizzes, they are just as important as taking a test. Also, when prepare a country talk, don’t put the whole text on you power point and then read it. The audience has taken enough reading classes, we know how to read, and we want to see an actual presentation. Mark Anderson International Marketing 410 4- 26- 07 What I learned in International Marketing was some of the most beneficial and retained information I have gotten out of any class so far in college. I learned business etiquette for foreign countries and some of the routes to take when trying to get your product to penetrate into a foreign market. The country talks made the biggest impression upon me. Every country has different quirks and customs but they all have a common denominator with the United States whether it is in business or personal life. I would have to say the Brazil Negotiations changed my outlook a little bit. I am one of those that goes headstrong into a deal knowing that I’m going to get my way, but that situation showed me that there a lot of compromise when it comes to business deals. I wish I would have known in advance really the structure of the tests and quizzes. They weren’t difficult but very scenario driven. I would suggest that future students at least take the quiz 5 to 10 times to see the variety of questions available that could possibly be on the test. The more of questions you have to study the better off you will be for the test. If I had known this in advance I would have taken the quizzes a few more times than just trying to get through them. Bethany Adams 4/25/07 International Marketing “What I learned” I feel that I learned a lot of important information about our surrounding countries and ultimately how lucky we are to live in such a great country! You don’t know how good we have it until you start learning about all the other countries. We should feel honored to live in the United States! For my the highlights of this course would defiantly have to be the country talks I learned a lot of useful and some fun and interesting things about many different countries. Some information that made an impression on me, would just have to be all the things that our country takes for gradate that many other countries don’t have or don’t do. I also thought it was very interesting how some countries act toward women opposed to the U.S. They seem to be a lot more respectful, but also Danika Parris International Mktg. 410 April 26, 2007 I learned so much in this International Marketing class. I had no idea that business etiquette in other countries was valued so heavily. I learned so many unique business etiquette about the other countries that I think I would adequately be prepared if I were to visit another country. The highlights of the course were the different countries and the central business ideas surrounding them. We began with Hong Kong and continued on to other countries throughout the semester. Most of the information I received was impressing to me because I plan on going into public relations and if I ever need to deal with an international client I would be thoroughly prepared because of the things I have learned in this class and I could use the book as a reference. The business etiquette tips in general changed my way of thinking. Knowing the way these other countries operate is essential to the business world. Culture has a major influence on business in several countries and this can definitely help you understand their ways of thinking. I wish I had known to keep copies of all my quizzes and tests. I heard in the advice before that they were essential to the course, but I never knew how important they were. When it was time to take the tests, if I would have kept all my quizzes it would have been much easier. Gentry Cartwright What I learned in International Marketing is that all cultures are different. Of course I already knew that, but what I mean is I learned how different each culture can be. For example, who knew that Italians believed they have to exit a room from the same door that they entered. This type of information is not only interesting but useful to know in case a person was to actually visit Italy. Not only did I learn about Italy, but I learned about many different cultures and values that they hold. Above all things I learned to be conscious of the fact that people are different. I wish I had known how important all of the little quizzes were. I just kept telling myself that I would try harder to do better on the next quiz and before I knew it, class was over. The most useful piece of advice I have for future students is to give yourself plenty of time to take the quizzes. I always thought I could take a quiz in thirty minutes, but many times I could not get the grade I was satisfied with when waiting until the last minute. Print out all of the questions from each quiz because the test comes directly from the quizzes! How wonderful! Ibra Ndoye MKTG 410 04/26/07 Advice Assignment Question 1 “What I learned”: I have learned a lot in this class. One of the things I have learned in general in this class, it is the fact that it in order to do business in a foreign country, it is really important to know about the culture, political stability, the economic policies and others legal systems. Failing to get to know some of those might put a Multinational Corporation in situation like expropriation, tax controls and others political risks. I have also learned a lot through country talks. From India to France, or from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia, business etiquettes are really different. For example some country’s business etiquette’s are more or less influenced by religion (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran…), others countries by their culture (Japan, China, Nigeria…). Overall this class wake me up about the different business cultures around the world. Question 2 “I wish I had known ” : Let me tell you something: this can be the easiest class BUT also it can be the hardest class you have taken. If you read the chapters, do the quizzes not only on time but at least 7 or 8 times, be sure to score between 95 and 100. However if you do the exact contrary like say wait before class and do quizzes 1 to 2 times and have only few good answers, you are going to hate yourself and only yourself on Exam day. My first exam was an 84 quizzes (only done 4 to 5 times the quizzes a day before the deadline), my last a 100 (8 to 10 times the quizzes way ahead the deadline). And believe me; I was sweating during the first exam even though it was at home. So you are warned. If I had to take this class I would probably take the quizzes as many I can to have a 100 every time on Exam day and not have to sweat on a cold day. India Dean April 26, 2007 International Marketing Advice Assignment What I learned in International Marketing was the importance of studying other cultures before trying to conduct business, because the consequences of not knowing could be lethal. I think some of the highlights of the course were the “American/ Brazilian negotiations project and the commercials we watched in class when we discussed how all marketing can’t be used in every country. The negotiations were great. My group really got into and we decided not to come to an agreement. It was crazy it almost sounded like a real battle. I really that I was most taken back by the individual presentations when just about everyone talked about how the sign language and hand movements that we do in the US are found to offensive everywhere else. I would have never really thought about it until it was repeated some many times in the reports. This course made me really question whether I wanted to continue to try to work in International Public Relations. It brought up some things that I really had never thought about. I wish I would have known that I could use my quizzes on the final. While I still do have some, I wish I would have saved a lot more of them. Jake Graves Marketing 410 4/26/07 What I Learned: In this class I learned about the business cultures of many countries. Some countries are direct with business and very structured. Other countries may not address the business on the first meeting. In fact the first meeting may only bring up topics relating to sports, weather, or current events. You may attempt to do business with another country, but without realizing it, the normal steps you would initiate might offend them. I also learned many interesting facts about countries during the power point presentations that the other students gave in class during the semester. I wish I had known: The key thing to know about this class is to keep ALL of your tests and quizzes. I learned this on the first day of class when Dr. Johnston read what other people wished they had learned. I also wish that I had gotten with some friends and bought one book. There is no need to have more than one. I also wish that in the book I had highlighted the answers when I found them throughout the whole time, so if I got the question again when retaking the quizzes and tests, I would already have it highlighted in the book. This would have made retaking tests a lot easier. James Seiber International Marketing April 26, 2007 What I have learned? This course is a valuable because you learn some much about the world and cultures and traditions of other nations or country’s. Some of the highlights of the course were the negotiation exercises and that class was always enjoyable. Some of the information that made an impression on me was how countries could be close geography but a vast difference is culture and traditions. The topics on globalization changed my perspective of it because I was against globalization but now I can see some advantages of the process. The class has also taught me to be opened minded to other business practices. The class gives you a diverse look on cultures and traditions around the world. International marketing is a valuable class because this class applies real world situations some one may face while doing business. The class is fun and entertaining and makes learning enjoyable. This class has been a great experiences for me and would questions that are asked on the quizzes aren’t even on the tests, but a lot are. Some of the movies that seem boring actually have interesting information in them so try to pay attention to them. John Price International Marketing What I have learned. I have learned that though businesses all over the world have a common goal, to make money, business is conducted in a wide variety of ways. I think that the best part of the course was the country talks. It is very interesting to hear about all the other countries around the world. The information that made the biggest impact on me was the country talks they make me want to travel the world. I also enjoyed the online quizzes the way you can take them over and over until you get them a one hundred on them. The things that changed some of my thinking were just learning about other cultures, it just helped me understand people better. I wish I had known. Remember the quizzes and start early on them that way you can take them as many times as it takes to get a hundred. Also remember to have plenty of quizzes either printed off or saved on your computer so when taking the test you will have plenty of information and make an A on the test. The only thing I wish I would have know is how fun the class was so I could take more classes under Dr. Johnston. Joseph Townson International Marketing What I learned In this course I learned how businesses compete in the global marketplace. It is very essential to understand the business culture in other countries so that doing business will run smoothly. The country talks were very informative in providing specific information about the certain country. This could be beneficial if doing business in that country. The trade negotiation was very fun and informative with having hands-on experience in international trade. I also learned about the emerging markets in the international marketplace. This class teaches you the importance of most countries in the world and how they relate to each other in trade or economic stability. I Wish I Had Known My advice to someone taking this class would be to read the chapters ahead of class and be prepared for the quizzes. When taking the quizzes take them ahead of time and don’t settle for a ten out of ten the first time. I would recommend taking the quizzes multiple times until you have seen the questions are repeated. This would insure you are ready for the exams and final exam. Print out each quiz and keep the questions for future reference. When you have a question sheet with a movie, pay attention and answer all questions since you may see them again on an exam. Justin Howell International Marketing 2-26-2007 What I Learned: I learned the different aspects of the business world from many different cultures. Different cultures do business in many different ways. The negotiation assignment really helped give me a feel of how contracts are conducted internationally. I enjoyed listening to the many Country Talks; they broadened my knowledge of how other countries do things. I know how a different views other than how we do things in America. I think that the online tests are a great idea. I believe that taking quizzes every week really helps with the learning and understanding of the material. I wish more classes were like this. You have to take the quizzes over and over to get the right answer. Once you have taken them several times, you are familiar with it. I Wish I Had Known: My advice to other students would be to stay caught up on all the quizzes, take the tests as soon as they are posted and take the quizzes several times even if you make a perfect score the first time. There really isn’t anything that I wished I had known beforehand, but I do wish that I would have taken all the quizzes early and got them out of the way. Then the only things that I would have had to do would be attend class and listen to the Country Talks. What I have learned from this course is how interesting other countries are, from the presentations that were done. Another highlight from the course is that you learn about international trading, most people do not think about how difficult it is to get the clothes that you wear everyday. The topics that changed my way of thinking would be that now I understand how other countries do business and their traditions that go along with business as well as everyday traditional life. The other topic that changed my way of thinking was realizing how long and difficult it is to trade with other countries. Because you have to understand their culture, and just the time it takes to make a deal with them, and get it here for everyone to buy. I wish I had known how important the quizzes would be. Quizzes and test are almost all of your grade and if you forget to do them or just do it a few times to get it finished it hurts your grade. I wish I would have known how important even the few extra points from the 8 to the 10 would have made a big difference with your ending grade, and make you go from an B to an A. You also want to take these quizzes a lot so that you can do good on the tests. If you only have one or two test per chapter when you get to your test it is going to take you longer and be more difficult. But if you have several quizzes from each chapter you can get finished with your test quicker, because you have the answer already figured out. Misty Ward Marketing 410 April 25, 2007 What I Learned In this course, International Marketing, I have learned many things. One on the main things is what is appropriate or acceptable in one country, normally the home country of the product or service, is not always accepted in different countries or regions. Each region or country has different norms and it is always important to better understand the culture before trying to begin doing business in that country or doing business with people in that country. The thing I liked the most during this course was watching the Levi Strauss commercials. I also learned different business customs from many of the country talks given in class. What I Wish I Had Known One of the main things I wish I had known about this class is not to procrastinate on taking the chapter quizzes and that the quizzes will always be due the day you have a test in the other class. TAKE THE QUIZZES EARLY! I also wish I had known that the country talk was not as bad as I had originally thought. Once you know what country you have just find things that are interesting to you and it will make things a lot easier. The most important thing is to take the quizzes early and many times and save them all for the tests! Mondi Porter International Marketing “What I learned?” What I learned in international marketing were many things. One of the things I learned in this class that the United States is very fortunate compared to all of the other countries that we have studied in this class. Some of the highlights in this course were the “Country Talks.” Those were very interesting. Some of the things that changed my way of thinking was the fact that you cannot handle business in every country like you do here in the United States. “I wish I had known” There is really nothing that I wish I had known because everything that I needed to know for this class was mentioned from previous advice from previous students. Things that they mentioned were to keep all of the quizzes and take as many quizzes as you can because they will help you in the long run. Another thing that helped was that they mentioned to have a book or at least somebody’s book. Having the book was the main source for quizzes and test. Another source for the test were the movies that were
