Dr. Hui-Min Kuo, Director of Undergraduate Studies Department of Communication Why am I interested in the Comm Major? • “Because the study of communication is broad that allows one to keep their opinions when it comes to choosing a career” • “communication can help me to really reach out and relate to people, and to articulate the exchange of ideas within our worldwide village” • “after trying out a few inductory courses from various subjects, I fell in love with communication” SC&I offers three majors and one minor: • Major: – Comm- communication – JMS- Journalism and media studies – ITI- Information Technology and informatics • Minor: – DCIM Digital communication, Information, and Media • No double major within SC&I. • Can take one major and one minor within SC&I. • Ok to change to another SC&I major, need to reapply. • SAS or SEBS status will not change if you become a SC&I major. What to take next? • Must have complete: – Expository writing with a grade of C or better. – At least 15 credits at RU or 15 transfer credits to RU, with a GPA 2.0 or better. – “189:101 Intro to Comm& Info Proc” with a grade of C or better. • To apply online, – SC&I admits students every fall, spring, and summer term. – Next admission cycle, summer 2012, deadline usually around mid-July. – Go to comminfo.rutgers.edu Returning to Interdisciplinarity • Intersections among range of disciplines • Communication in context – Interpersonal, family, organizational, mediated, mass… • World of “applied communication” What to take next? • 189:102 or 189:103, if you have not completed it. • 192:200 comm theory • 192:201 comm and relationships Joint BA & MCIS for Communication Majors • MCIS- Master of communication and information studies. – Start master degree while still an undergraduation – Up to 4 courses that can double-count towards MCIS One more word of advice • Plan early, plan early, plan early! – What to do with your major(s) and minor(s) – How to take courses to strenghten education? – How to persue internships and other practice opportunities to build up extracurricular experience? – How to develop and expand networks with faculty, staff and peers?
