Deborah Manson Annotated bib due: Mon, 3/30 Engl 1101 Outline due: Wed, 4/1 Essay 3: Arguing a Position Full draft due: Mon, 4/6 Final draft due: Wed, 4/8 What’s Your Position? For your third essay, you will argue for your stance on a controversial issue and support your ideas with academic research. Your thesis should make a focused argument about your topic; think about your own personal values, and how they inform your position. Each body paragraph will develop a point in support of your thesis and/ or address the opposition. Support will come in the form of facts, statistics, personal testimony, informed opinions, and/or your own opinions or experiences. Remember that a strong argument establishes your credibility and appeals to both emotion and logic. You should pick your topic from the Facts on File database. From the CSU Library homepage, click on the “Other Resources” tab under “Resources.” Scroll down to the Facts on File listing and click on it. Enter ccsulib as your user name, and 7alice32 as your password. From the Facts on File homepage, select “Issues and Controversies.” From the bottom right-hand corner, under “Need a Research Topic?,” select “More Research Topics,” and you’ll get a double-columned list of topics. Pick a broad topic, and click on it to get a list of smaller subtopics. Pick one of these narrower subjects for your paper; if your topic is too broad, it will be hard to cover it successfully in a 3- page paper. For example, “Tobacco Issues” would be too broad, but “Smoking Bans” would be a nice topic for this essay. The key features of a position paper that your essay should include:  a clear and arguable position  good reasons  convincing support for each reason  appeal to readers’ values  a trustworthy tone  careful consideration of other positions The boring details: Your essay must be at least 1000 words (that’s about 3 pages). It should be double spaced, using a 12 point, Times New Roman font. You must use a minimum of 3 sources, and all of your sources must come from library databases. I will teach you how to use library databases during class. In addition to Facts on File, the database titled Academic Search Complete also contains a significant amount of information. If you have trouble finding sources, see me or a reference librarian for help. You must provide a Works Cited page that documents your sources using MLA format, and you must turn in a copy of all of your sources. Finally, you must post your essay to turnitin.com before class on the date that the final draft is due.
